Re: Anyone seen the movie Abandoned on Netflix?

Just watched it the other night, and a couple of things got me about the movie.. The captain should have been better equipped electronically.. The lack of a sat phone when you are beyond radio distance is not forgivable these days.. They are not expensive.. Then did you notice how clean the bottom of the hull happened to be?? The captain seemed like a guy used to cutting corners.. It didn't seem like he would have had a sparkling clean bottom hull.. flk k

I did notice the hull, but remember that was a prop, not the real boat I'm sure, and what year did it happen? I got the impression for some reason that it might have been a while ago

It happened in 1989, and the Captain was clear that he purposely was a "minimalist" who didn't want to rely on technology.

Re: Anyone seen the movie Abandoned on Netflix?

Just watched the first couple of minutes.

Does it explain any of the pre-story, later in?

I was wondering why they were floating, out there, with a furled main, a shredded jib, and everybody asleep below decks, when the wave hit.

If it is, don't tell me what had happened, just tell me that yes, it is explained.

Re: Anyone seen the movie Abandoned on Netflix?

1989 technology was neanderthal at best. radio beacons and loran.
compass
charts. omygods no gps. no satfone. wow
how the hell did they do this.

funny how folks have managed to find selves and get them selves around the world, and from point a to point b before the gps was commonplace, much less invented.
omy how quaint.

damn we managed to find our way from lost angeles harbor to 2 harbors without loran or gps or fone of any kind. wow. what a miracle. same to be said for our finding our way from lost angeles san pedro to mission bay, san diego.. wow miracle of miracles. we didnt die.. ha ha ha ha ha

hvent seen this offered on mexinetflix.. i will keep a look out. i love to laugh at sound stage oceanic adventures....

using rotten tomatoes as a movie guide? come on...

I thought this movie was entirely better than All is Lost in every way. I liked how the main character (captain) actually seemed to know about sailing and the terminology wasn't annoying or badly used. There could have been more sailing scenes, but overall not a bad sail/survival movie.

Re: Anyone seen the movie Abandoned on Netflix?

I watched that movie and enjoyed it.
A good movie showing survival at sea, especially the challenge of personalities among survivors.

What is amazing is that after 119 days adrift, they wound up on another island, Great Barrier Island, which is part of the chain of islands that make up New Zealand. In short, they landed not too far from where they started.

Here is a good web page with an first person article about the event, written by the skipper of the trimaran Rose Noelle, John Glennie. This page has several photos showing the interior and exterior of the boat. It also mentions the electrionics he had aboard the boat.

"Equipped with color radar ,sat nav, solar panels, VHF and ham radios, 13 winches, hydraulic backstay and wind generator just to name a few. The complete cruising machine."

John Glennie. “Master of the Sea.†part 1 - MastersConnection2020

Also, that page shows that the skipper, John Glennie had built another Tri previously and had sailed it extensively in the Pacific. So he was not a newbie to sailing or to trimarans.

If you want to see where they left on their ill fated voyage and then where they landed 119 days later, go to Google maps and enter Picton, New Zealand (origin) and then Great Barrier Island, New Zealand.

According to Glennie, the rogue wave happened during a storm, not as depicted in the opening scene of the movie.

"In a southerly gale three days out and hove to under a collapsed sea anchor, Rose-Noelle capsized when she was hit by a rogue wave - another 60 foot wall of water that turned us upside down in a matter of seconds.

We were still in the Roaring Forties and to make matters worse, it was Southern hemisphere winter time. June 4th.

This was not looking good. And it would be not looking good for the next 119 days."

His boat was 40 foot and self designed.

By the way, I was in an offshore race in the Pacific when a 40 - 50 foot trimaran that had passed my (I was not the owner) Farr 40 foot mono boat earlier capsized in high seas and high winds, throwing the crew overboard and resulting in a helicopter search for their crew at night. In that race, it was not a capsize as a result of a rogue wave. We were surfing down big swells, and it was difficult to control the boat.

Watched it recently and found it enjoyable. All plausible; does highlight the limitations of multi-hulls in bad conditions, mono hull might have rolled, but should right itself.

Re: Anyone seen the movie Abandoned on Netflix?

It's not on the UK Netflix library, only the US site. Sucks I know. $40 a year will buy you a vpn to solve the problem but without one you are out of luck.

Re: Anyone seen the movie Abandoned on Netflix?

I watched it. I found myself saying the same things I said with all is lost. Why isn't anyone on watch. Stay with the boat. Ohh look, that part is called...

I looked the book up and read the back story to see how it differed from the movie version. I only gave it three stars, 50% was about right.

Re: Anyone seen the movie Abandoned on Netflix?

Ok please dont forget im in the uk

After a bit of a search trying to actually watch the movie ,

it appears this movie was re branded "stranded"

probably cos there are 5 other movies (at least ) called abandoned

It also seems now there are a few called "stranded" too .

but its not on uk netflix under any guise at the minute .
