Its pretty straight forward. Keep out of the Andes Katabatic wind zone by keeping a little north till you are well past the northern point of Columbia. Its easy to see on the pilot charts... Just keep out of the large wave area!
Its a good trip. Have fun.

Re: Antigua to Panama crossing: recomendations
Did it in a straight line from SMX.. pretty easy really.. just keep around 80-100 miles off the Columbian coast to stay away from the lumps.. downwind run till you start to close Colon..

Re: Antigua to Panama crossing: recomendations
I did Antigua to Panama in late May (about 20 years ago) , in a Peterson 44. By 2 days out we were DDW with a double reefed main and a #2 poled out. Thank heavens for the Aries steering. It stayed like that until about 100 miles before Colon. It was a great ride, but looking behind let me know that a man overboard situation would have been hopeless. A couple of days before Colon we passed a huge tanker that was going up wind, and burying its bow and taking water and spray, probably 2/3 of the way to its stern. It was a sobering sight. I think we stayed a little North of a straight line, but not by much. In Colon, talking to people that had done the passage a week or 2 before, said that they had a nice gentle sail. In planning on leaving mid May, you cant sit around for too long waiting on the perfect weather, or you might delay into Hurricane season. Better to have heavy trades than a tropical storm. More than likely , you will have a nice gentle sail. Best of luck. _____Grant.

Re: Antigua to Panama crossing: recomendations
Well, it is a small island with one anchorage, so nothing really needs to be recommended there. Lots of loud music and jet skis - the Cancun of Colombia. You will be going quite a bit North and somewhat West of Panama, so will need to backtrack down to there. Frankly, if you plan to pass up Santa Marta and, especially, Cartagena to visit San Andreas, you are picking the worst of Colombia to see.

Re: Antigua to Panama crossing: recomendations
Provedencia is much better than San Andreas. We were there in Jan with a 35 footer. Small, protected harbor with well marked entry. Forgot his name, but call on 16 for an english speaking agent will handle customs, immigration for you. Diesel and gas available for jugs. Good Columbian military presence. Several small stores for provisions and hardware.

Re: Antigua to Panama crossing: recomendations
Providencia is laid-back with no commercial tourism operations at all. Complete opposite of San Andreas, with the exception that it too is a small island with one anchorage.

Agent name is Mr Bush IIRC. Makes the process easy.
We like Providencia a lot, San Andres not so much.

Re: Antigua to Panama crossing: recomendations
We will be sailing to Colon at the end of this month coming from Grenada. I'm looking at the weather around Columbia for the last 4 months and it looks like it's becoming calmer now. We will probably make a stop in Aruba and wait for a good weather window to round this 'cape'. The last weeks there where some periods of calmer wind and seas for a few days.

Re: Antigua to Panama crossing: recomendations
Yes, the past few weeks have been a fantastic weather window for that area. The calmer windows open and close - more closed than open, so if you get a decent 3-day forecast, be prepared to pick up and leave immediately. It can stay kicked up for weeks/months at a time.

Re: Antigua to Panama crossing: recomendations
Sail westwards.
Read wx forecast on departure.
It can be light close to Panama.
It can be very rainy close, and in, Panama.
Avoid the wind hook off Columbia if there is a low over Columbia.
Cheers,
b.
