I think you were either being sardonic, or mistyped and meant to say:

"... what you "need" to make THEIR life better"

Re: anti-Facebook rule?

I use Facebook to keep in touch (and an eye on) my kids in college out of state.

I have re-connected with friends I lost touch with during my many moves.

Like anything else, in moderation it serves as a useful tool.

As for Bash's original question, if asked to take someone out, If I like them, I tell them to bring beer for the reefer and food for the crew. If I don't, I simply say I have to lube the cutlass bearing.

My real problem with Facebook is that it eliminates human contact in communication and reduces everything in life to superficial, self-absorbed soundbites.
I am sure that in the long run it will provide a significant contribution to man's on going process of devolution.
The GREAT thing about Facebook is that it facilitates INCREASED human contact for people with highly mobile lifestyles and a widely dispersed network of family and friends.

Pbbbt.

Sounds like we can now add FB to anchors, pirates and guns as hot button topics.

Give me wine and dinner every time
i know people who said a similar thing about the "internet" when that first came out!

they are still sitting in the same old pub with the same old people, complaining about the same old things

Re: anti-Facebook rule?

I thought that facebook was for parents who want to communicate to the children. I remember when I (my dog) was on myspace (just to read the menus at area restaurants) and a new college graduates said that I needed to join facebook, but you had to have .edu email account. I removed myspace account when I heard of their bankruptcy.

Just now started on facebook for "facebook.com/tmca.springfling" volunteer duty, and boy do I dislike it as compared to myspace. No way of personalizing the site. But it does help with advertising the event though.

We have no privacy anymore. It is sad. Thankful that I got out of my crazy partying college days before the internet took off.

Well actually Atoll, I write with a quill pen, although sometimes I use a hammer and chisel on a piece of rock. Both work well.

I'm not a luddite, if someone wants to use Facebook - fine with me. I just don't feel the need to "update" my "friends" that at the moment I'm writing on cruisers forum.

I prefer to call (speak) with friends or go visit them.

But i'm just an old fart

sorry was not infering that you are an old fart, more that there are people that are unable to move with the times.

personally it is a great way of keeping track of ex-crew and old friends cruising around the world, without having to rely on emails or phone calls.

quite often on deliveries i get a chance to catch up with "friends" who otherwise i would probably miss a "chance" encounter.

I'm hard pressed to see a lot of difference between what I do on Facebook versus what I do on CF. Pictures, personal information, messaging, comments, all going out to "friend" or members and pretty much available to anyone on the Internet. Please someone tell me how it's any different.

I didn't take offense. But I still prefer some red wine and a good dinner.

out of my 350 odd friends on fb,only about 20 of them live in the uk
,when travelling,(and being a "free food specialist") having friends in 90 odd countries gives endless opertunities for wine and a good dinner

pirate Re: anti-Facebook rule?

FB's something I rejoined a year or so back..
I had left during the 'crazy time' when everyone was aiming for 1/2 a million friends..
This time the personal stuff is nonsense and friends are restricted to real friends/people I know and some others I don't... like fellow CF members not yet met... generally folk with a love of the sea.
Also someone suggested it 'MAY' increase my custom...
that I'm not so sure about..
but CF is always my 1st port of call when not sailing...
FB gives me something other to read than anchor and gun/pirate threads...
