Another one Bites the Dust

Saddened at the loss of this boat this morning due to no maintenance and poor management.

Ugh, that sucks! Is that in Thailand? People: be a good Samaritan, adopt a derelict boat.

Sometimes free is still way to expensive!

Shame but factual, looked like she was once nice.

Is there any way to know that these boats exist and how to "adopt" them? Just wondering..I know that they are out there and locals see them, but how would someone that is not a local know that such a vessel existed? Let alone how to go about legally taking possession..
Has anyone done this?

Yes its in Thailand and the owner doesn't have the knowledge or budget to maintain this boat. It is now getting deeper and deeper in the mud with every tide and is a hazard to local shipping.

You should go out there and blow it up!

Re: Another one bites the dust

Sure, some boats are not worth saving. Most all old plastic boats are a financial nightmare: expensive to fix up and virtually worthless when you want to put it back on the market. All the gear on those boats however is still useful and extremely valuable to some of us poor sobs who lack the 500$ to replace that broken winch with a shiny new one.

I've literally been to every boatyard here in Belgium trying to get them to sell/give me some parts from those derelict boats that have obviously been standing there for years and years (one boat that had the exact rope jammers I needed had a tree growing through it that was obviously over 10 years old). They simply wouldn't let me get near the boats... It's a legal nightmare, as the boats cost the yards thousands each year, but they don't have the right to touch/sell/demolish them as they're somebody's property, and the only way to get rid of them is to sue the owners which would cost a fortune.

That, in my opinion, is the big shame.

That's a shame. It looks like she was a beautiful boat at one point

Re: Another one Bites the Dust

Orchidius, I think you're explained the situation very well and it really is a shame that something can't be done because there is so much useful and expensive hardware on many of these boat that could be reused by a viable cruiser. Seems to be the same sort of problem everywhere.

That picture reminds me....I arrived at a crowded anchorage late one dark night, after slowly exploring the whole harbor found a small open area, dropped the hook, and went to bed. While cooking breakfast the next morning, I happened to take a peek outside to see who our "neighbors" were and was surprised to see the top of a mast barely sticking out of the water about 15' away off our beam. My first thought was "how did I not see that last night?!" But it clearly had been there for a few days at least. Luckily, it was a very calm night and we didn't swing into it! One of those sights you never forget....
