Annapolis to Cape Cod Bay

Can anyone recommend a good cruising guide for marinas and anchoring sites and pints of interest sailing from Annapolis, thru the C&D canal, to cape May, thru NY harbor, Long Island sound, Martha's vineyard, and the cape cod canal to cape cod bay.

Eldridge's tide book; waterway guide and paper charts.
And when are you going? Not now I hope.

thanks. we are planning ahead for August. I've got plenty of cruiser guides for Ches Bay and ICW, looking for a similar book for NJ and long island area.

Go to Bacons in Annapolis. They have a pile of used guides that might have something for your trip. We went to Block and Newport last year from the West River. Went outside from Cape May to Block. Back thru LI and NYC. The best advice I received was not to try to do too much in one trip.

Re: Annapolis to Cape Cod Bay

Doug - Not sure how long you are going for. 20 years ago ago we did:

Annapolis
C&D
Cape May
Block Island
Martha's
Nantucket
Martha's
Wood's Hole
Cuttyhunk
Montauk
NYC (Hell's Gate was interesting)
Atlantic City
Cape May
C&D
Home

Generally, the locals were more ornery as we went North, and less so as we retreated back to Dixie. Scenery was great - take your bikes for sure. Beware the afternoon Seabreeze Block Island and beyond. You might have flat calm and misty weather in the morning, breeze by Noon and 30 knots by 2:30pm!

Re: Annapolis to Cape Cod Bay

Good advice already posted. Likely SW winds going both directions. I have used Commanders Weather for very cheap and reliable custom forecasts. Best to arrive in Newport before dark because of possible fog conditions great alternative marina is Connecut Marina on Jamestown at the ferry landing to Newport. Van service from Providence airport.

I've always liked the info I found in the Cruising Guide to the New England Coast.
You can probably pick up a used copy.

+ 1 on Eldridge

The Cruising Guide to the New England Coast - 12th Ed.

+1 on both of these. The Cruising Guide is out of date for things that change (restaurants, marina phone numbers, etc.), but still a great resource for harbors, anchorages, conditions. Use Active Captain and/or one of the more current guides as a complementary resource.

Eldredge's (and a tide and current app) are critical up this way. Tidal ranges and associated currents are very different from the Chesapeake. Traveling from the tip of Long Island to the Cape Cod Canal is a piece of cake if you time your currents well and a slog if you don't. Once you get north of the Canal you'll see 6-9 foot ranges which impact where you can go and how fast you get there.

I used ActiveCaptain to plan my trip from Edgewater, MD to Narragansett Bay two years ago. Plus Eldredge, of course. We had a great trip.

Re: Annapolis to Cape Cod Bay

Avoid an afternoon ebbing tide in Buzzards Bay. The normal SE sea breeze against the out going tide will stack 6' waves close to Wings Neck. Active Captain is your friend
