Don't leave your camera in rinse buckets on dive boats. #1 place for flooding is cameras getting banged around. Also always make sure that there's no hair on your seals - human, dog, cat, or fibers from towels.

If you religiously keep the camera clean and free of salt, you'll likely "never" need to replace seals or do any type of recommended "annual service".

Good luck,

Jason
This makes a lot of sense. No worries on dive boats, etc., just our little sailboat!

Re: All purpose waterproof digital camera

We bought an Olympus Tough TG-5 last December and have taken maybe two thousand shots so far, including Caribbean snorkelling. It's been durable and reliable so far.

It's my belief that if you regularly inspect your camera's seals and clean them whenever any flap is open, they should last quite a while. Anyone have other maintenance tips?

Go-pro have wide angled lens.
You cant adjust your white balance without going into menus, they don't have flashes or zomm.
Go-pro is an action video camerà not a still camera.
The olympus does videos but it's a still first.

The camera captures video in 360 degrees and then you choose the view you want and don't have to worry about missing a shot. As an example if a shark comes up behind you and bites off your foot you will have it in the vid, even if you were photographing the clown fish in the coral ahead of you.

Yes but anything off center will still have distortion (curvature of a straight line) since this is just another fish-eye type camera, like the GoPro.

Nikon Coolpix AW100 has served me well. It probably has been superseded by a newer model.

Re: All purpose waterproof digital camera

In the class of waterproof/tough cameras, for photos, the Olympus TG-6 is most highly rated, followed by Nikon Coolpic W300. The Panasonic DC-TS7 has the potential to be a great camera w/EVF, but plagued by focus and speed issues. It is interesting that there's no deals on the Olympus, lots of goodies included with the Nikon and a $150 rebate on the Panasonic.

I don't think the GoPro or clones is what I'm looking for. I'm more a a SLR traditionalist and like still photography. The TG-6 comes as close to my old SLR camera and more features than I'll ever use!

Thanks again for the input!

Re: All purpose waterproof digital camera

I filmed some with a GoPro 7 and ended up exporting movie frames as still pictures. It's ok and fun for instagram, facebook etc. It would be great to have a waterproofed/encased DSLR.

The attached pic is an exported frame from a Hero7 mp4.

DSLR are great but big.
Do consider the new mirrorless cameras like the Sony A6000 series.
Much lighter and compact then any DSLR on the market.
The housing should be around the same price has a DSLR housing.
Also the new mirrorless are less obvious and more discret if you bring them to lets say islands that are prone to theft.

Re: All purpose waterproof digital camera

I have an Olympus TG5 that I have used for a few years and no problems whatsoever with it I also have an older Olympus tough camera with the telescoping lease that is at least ten years old and still going strong it did leak while under warranty I sent it back to be repaired this lasted maybe two years then leaked again and needed to be repaired again the second time this cost me $125 USD still cheaper than a new camera I then bought the TG5 since the original tough is no longer made I use it as a back up

Re: All purpose waterproof digital camera

In addition to those listed All purpose digitals I'd recommend the Fuji XP series. Mine is a XP80. The only downside is that while waterproof to 50 feet it doesn't float My XP 70 is at the bottom of one of my inland fishing lakes.
Sample of a grab shot this afternoon is attached.

Re: All purpose waterproof digital camera

Shocking, I had to look, both products do say waterproof.

My Luminox “professional” diving watch rated for 200 M is only water resistant.
The difference I found when it flooded during my 12 yr old daughters check out dive is “resistant” isn’t a guarantee of anything as they wouldn’t fix it under warranty.

Waterproof is a term that I didn’t think was used anymore.

I have owned and used several waterproof cameras, most recently the Coolpix W300. (We use these with school groups and they seem to disappear regularly.) Before I bought I looked at each of the cameras I was considering on Amazon and read the reviews. That was shocking. Many stories about people buying one or the other of the various cameras and having them leak the first time they take them into the water. And for a few buyers stories about them finding out that water damage wasn't covered under their warranty.

I guess the moral of the story is ... damn, I have no idea what .

But my Coolpix W300's (I have owned two) seem to be okay.
