Air draft 65 ft in ICW (VA and NC)

Just measured our boat, it is 65 ft. Am I crazy to go thru the portion of ICW from Norfolk to Morehead City?

We are planning to go outside. But just in case, looking for another safe alternative. TIA

The hardest part will be the bridge in the Alligator/Pungo canal. Many times it is less than 65'. The water depth depends on the wind here, not tides so you can't even wait for low water. You can avoid this by going out Albemarle Sound and then inside the barrier islands. I have not done this and am unfamiliar with water depths there. Myself, I would not attempt the ICW with 65'.

The Pungo Ferry Bridge in Virginia has also had a history of problems with vessels requiring the full 65' clearance.

Hello
Take two sailbags in good condition and if you have any doubts about your height attach the sailbags to the main halyard and a keeper, fill them with water and leave them hanging over the side, this will tilt your boat about 8 to 10 degrees and line up your top of mast with the red and slowly maneuver your way under the bridge,

...measured our boat, it is 65 ft...

If that's your extreme/high-point, is said point (as with most yachts) the top of the VHF antenna?

If yes, then disconnect and remove it; you'll then have one or even two feet less height

Thanks Captains, looks like we will just wait in Little Creek if Gonzalo decides to head a bit west.

I usually don't take Pungo Ferry Bridge side.

Haha.... Saw that a few times and it is supercool. But certainly I would not want to do this with other peoples boat. When you deliver OPB, you tiptoe and never take any risk. LOL.
