Re: advice which navionics ?
Help us by narrowing the question. Are you buying a map card for a chartplotter (which one, make and model?), using the Boating app on a handheld device (which one, make and model), both, or something else?

Either way, iff you're subscribing to an app for phone/tablet or buying a card for your chart plotter, , you want the "USA" product. There is a central american one that may cover LA but won't go as far north as SF.

I would like navionics on an android smartphone.

Navioncs plus is what you want. I believe a one year subscription is about $50. But get an iPad with gps...the phone screen is too small to be useful, in my opinion.
Have a great trip.

Since you're an android guy, may I suggest the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet? 10 inch screen, built in GPS (that many iPads don't have), daylight readable, and waterproof.

Re: advice which navionics ?
Navionics for Android will provide you with excellent charts from SF to LA on subscription, but I do hope you are also carrying paper charts at least for the coast and the channel leading to your destination south of Point Concepcion...

Re: advice which navionics ?
Navionics have great apps. Try it first on your phone. Yes, get the USA area. After you install the app you down load charts for the areas you want to sail in. A tablet is definitely nicer to use, but do look at one that works well in sun. The big problem for me with tablets is the poor visibility in sunlight. And, yes, for any voyage like you are contemplating keep track of your course on paper charts. You never know what might happen out there.

Daylight readable was the main driver in getting the Sony Z4 Tablet. iPad has a bright screen, and the Z4 is the only one I know of with a brighter screen. I'm able to read mine with no problem sailing in the Bahamas in full sun.

I have a NuShield Screen Protector on my Samsung tablet and phone. This shield wasdeveloped for use in surgery rooms. I now use both with Navonics on my sailboat in the sun with little problems.

As a back-up, I have iNavX on my iPhone, and for coastal cruising it's an inexpensive, functional app for NOAA raster charts.
