Advice From Young Punks

Okay...so this whole "sailing advice" thing seems to be skewed toward lonely, bitter, old dudes. There are certain things that this sorrowful demographic just won't (can't possibly) know.

So, when it comes to sailing in cool new ways, there is a great body of knowledge in the punks of CG2.

This is the thread for that. I'll start...

In terms of sound quality, the Hero sucks. What's the best action HD cam out there that can actually grab good audio (not the tinny Hero sound, not the wind-blasted-killed-audio cam, etc.).

I've looked at everything from the Hero to the Ion. I need something better.

Ok buddy. Here is your one response

As you may remember I do work in the Biz as well, and external mic is the way to go whatever you do. What 'sound' are you trying to grab? Dialogue or action effects? That also determines what you want.

Eiter way forget the internal mic. It's like sailing downwind with a small jib and asking how you can get more speed. You can't. You need to get a spinnaker.

Get a spinnaker.

Sailing advice skewed to lonely, bitter, old dudes? Where are you hanging out? There's certainly a fair share of old dudes on this forum but very few seem to be lonely or bitter.

Guess I'm old and ignorant so can anyone tell me what CG2 is? Maybe this thread would make a little more sense.

Holy crap! I was wondering where you went dude!

Yes - trying to catch dialogue mostly, canceling out the wind. I just don't like the underwater, overcompressed sound of the GP internal mic.

I need the spinnaker of HC Cams.

Good to see you Chall. I'll keep up the good fight for you.

Have you tried the hero out of the housing? The YouTube sound test I saw it sounded tinny inside, but really good when it was taken out. Our intovaHD cam has shitty sound, but it was cheap and the vid is good

Yeah - it's definitely better, but there is still the wind-noise issue.

This guy below has a pretty good setup I suppose. It just seems clunky - and still a bit too much gain brightness with the external mic. I guess I'm just too picky (and bitter! heh-heh).

Sorry but I'm still clueless and confused. Google returns nothing relevant if I search that term. Is this a web site, a blog, a secret society, a insiders clique where I'm not a member?

At this point, if you're still confused, consider yourself solidly in the old/lonely/bitter camp

And if you're wondering, the "Be Happy"/"Mr Happy"/"Pac-Man-ish" face above is a "smilie", or "emoticon", or "emoji" - meant to inflict emotion upon a typed sentence. The concept is a bit after my time but I can still see the wave crest in the distance

Back on point, GoPro is (unfortunately) the quick/easy solution right now. Swann offers better bang-for-buck for most people wanting decent HD youtube vides, but comparing flat out specs apples to apples GoPro wins out. All of them suck for audio though, unless you spend $$ for fragile external audio mic. At which point, why bother with the cheap/rugged GoPro in the first place? Fisheye sucks compared to any decent wide angle lens anyway.

That is all....
