Adding to the boating kitty.

I have read numerous posts about making a living, or at least a contribution to the kitty, by writing articles to the many yachting magazines out there.
Like most people I expect, I viewed this as a bit out of my league, not being a qualified writer, with no byline to brag about to editors.
Well, I gave it a shot, and had an article accepted by “Good Old Boat” magazine, which I subscribed to anyway, because I think it is one of the best magazines for the do-it-yourself boat owner.
It has just been published in the January edition, about how to build yourself over-the-top-blocks, and I have another four coming out during the year!
I’m just telling anyone who might have an article in their mind—it can be done, and the proceeds have added very nicely to our boat pot.

Congrats!! They always say "write what you know." Seems you've done just that.

Now that you've piqued my curiosity, however, I have one question: How much does it pay? I know that's a somewhat personal question, so even a ball-park answer would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I did put it in my first draft, but then I deleted it because the editor makes individual offers which vary according to the number of words, quality of photographs, general interest, etc.

An indication is in the Good Old Boat writer’s guidelines, but different magazines pay differently. All I will say is, the four articles I sold will buy a new freezer in my boat.

If you can get about 120 articles per year published, you can afford to cruise

Yes, nobody is more amazed than me, and to get four accepted, well?

I’m now wracking my brain for other things I might write about. I thought installing a hot tub in a 45’ sailboat might be of great interest, (even in a whacky sort of way), but the editor didn’t think many readers would want to do that.

I can’t think why, I think everyone should have one, but there you go.....

Roger probably received $700 for his well written & illustrated article.

$700 Original new technical article (runs 3,000-5,000 words)
$500 Maintenance and upgrade articles and other sailing features (1,500-3,000 words)
