A walk down memory lane of training ships

After researching Zee's Formosa, I got nostalgic and started tripping down memory lane. I was very fortunate to have been in the CMA class that trained on both Golden Bear II and III. #2 being a steam turbine ship built in 1940, and III being a medium speed diesel built for the navy. Keel laid in 1986, delivered to the Navy in 1989 as a dual purpose vessel that performed both rolls poorly. Engines to produce the power the navy contract called for were run at 800 rpm and broke. Barbara Boxer was able to secure after engine replacement this ship to replace our old steam turbine Bear. Our campus is in the background.


This is the grand old steam turbine Golden Bear, the Crescent City before her 40+ year stint as our training ship.


And I'm sorry to report (and I just found this out today) this is all that remains of a very memorable vessel. The inside artwork (some would call graffiti) documented training classes through out 40 years.

It started with your boat on SSSSM, I'm beginning to see and appreciate our maritime history, and it was sad for me to know the ship I chipped rust off and painted has been reduced to just tip of the bow. I sure hope I can find some interior pictures of GB II.

i am having fun reseaching my great grandfathers old shipping compnay--many great ships from that day--old steam ships, some sailing vessels---many different kinds of merchant transport vessels....all are exciting to learn thankyou for the privilege of watching as you start a fun to watch and enjoy project!!!!

I'd love for you to research your great grandfather's time with Nikola Tesla. Any pictures?

bob--there are no pix i know of and it is still classified, as far as i know--pm me for further info so i am not besieged by nsa officials trying to see if i know anything..LOL.
my training ship from age 7-18:
she was designed by clifton crane and built somewhere in new england and is gonna be 110 yrs old june 2013.

Well zee, I'm glad your grandfather, Tesla, and Westinghouse won out over Edison for AC power. Think of how cluttered the landscape would be if all electrical power distributed was at the user's voltage? I've seen old pictures of that block in NY that Edison wired for DC, and all those wires were butt ugly.
