A Great Way to Spend an Hour...

When it comes to low budget sailing, I don’t think anyone has documented this better than Moxie Marlinspike. Moxie made a documentary of his low budget sailing adventure on Pestilence entitled Hold Fast. His hour long story is done in an extremely high quality film that is NPR / PBS quality. In a comment below the film, a person wrote the format reminded them of This American Life and an Ira Glass narration. I agree. Here is a link to the film. When you have an hour to kill and you want a darn good story about some young people setting out on an adventure, give this a look. By the way, you need to give the movie a few minutes to get past the opening editing, and then the story really unfolds.

Enjoy!

Re: A Great Way to Spend an Hour...

This video seems to pop up on the forum every few months and my opinion has not changed.

I admire their ability to cruise on a budget. I started out cruising with not much more than this.

However, I did manage to put a boat together and go cruising without trespassing on other boats and stealing materials. If I had caught these guys doing this on my boat I would have had them arrested.

It was a bit over the line here and there... but I was disgusted with the 'Boat Minder' who wrecked someones (the boat he was minding) Hi-ab lifting the mast.. the kids naturally thought it was a hoot... wonder what the owners thought..

Absolutely. The boat minder was guilty as charged.

However, if I recall, the kids were already trespassing and squatting on the boat when boat minder discovered them but instead of calling the law or at least booting them off he allowed them to continue and agreed to let them use the boat's davits to raise their mast.

I agree. If it were my boat, I'd be miffed. However, as a "kid" I probably would have done the same.

Good little movie.
That boat would make me nervous as hell in bad weather.

No kidding! I think it was held together with duct-tape.
