Re: A good surveyor does not guarantee a good survey
So don't talk with the surveyer. And we had to demand emails of there intentions as adjustor said he could only speak with us as directed. We said ok then we are recording the conservation

Re: A good surveyor does not guarantee a good survey
We could not get hard copy estimates. Boatyard said they got approved for work, adjuster said no he didn't. Behaving like children. Very unprofessional. That the Progressive we got !

Re: A good surveyor does not guarantee a good survey
What have we established here?
Surveyers require no licenses, only certs within their own societies. 10% of them or less command 90% or more of the available work, mainly for insurances and banks. Loks like schysters full circle to me.
Granted we have a handful of reputable surveyors. On this forum are a couple exemplaries, I believe.
Then we have brokers, bankers, insurances and the surveyors hanging with them, and lewyers writing up their contract legalize.
A motly crew indeed !!

Re: A good surveyor does not guarantee a good survey
Too many folks think that a survey is an absolute must before a boat purchase is closed on. A surveyor should only be used as an additional resource to your own evaluation and common sense. A surveyor should only be used AFTER you have gone through the vessel on your own or with a knowledgeable friend. Identify areas of concern to you to the surveyor and accompany him/her on their inspection. Question, question, question... you are paying for their expertise. Don't waste time on issues that you have scoped out yourself. Really a good idea to get several references from former clients, not brokers. Make certain they are experienced in surveying the make and model of the vessel you are considering. If your surveyor of choice is experienced in working on high end muscle power boats and you are buying a cruising sailboat, you're making a poor choice! Surveys for insurance purposes is something entirely different. Good luck! Phil

Re: A good surveyor does not guarantee a good survey
Hauling a boat out of the water and getting a thorough survey isn't cheap so I'm wondering at what price point surveying more than one boat becomes impractical so you need to be spot on with your selection process.
By that I mean, it's one thing to survey 3 or 4 different boats if you're spending $100,000; it's something else again if you're in the market for something 30 years old that costs $20,000...
Or do people trust their gut and buy older, cheaper boats without a survey and assume they will spend that extra money in refits from the get go? Eg, if you're going pay to haul the boat out of the water you might as well paint the bottom and replace the through hulls right?

Ahhhh ! IMS is a very curious outfit. They will also analyse and certify rice in China. before you buy it.
Lots of Russian accents in that office.

Re: A good surveyor does not guarantee a good survey
So he is probably a sub contractor. Look into his qualifications and if they don't add up. Ask the underwriter for someone more qualified to be assigned.
I had a claim about 20yrs ago and the ins. co denied it based on the the surveyors report. After proving the surveyor had no education or certification in surveying, a properly qualified surveyor was assigned and my claim approved.
No they would not let me survey my own claim

Re: A good surveyor does not guarantee a good survey
Ok, gentlemen and ladies, please suggest how one might vet a surveyor.
I will ask for how many yrs certified and at what classifications,
How many surveys have you logged?
How many of your surveys have been disputed?
I need at least 4 references , not from brokers.
What is your experience in the industry?
How many steel boats have you surveyed?
Explain the ultrsound process in simple manner.
( I already have ultrasound quotes from 250 to 1200)
I need a copy of your checklist of the extent of the survey.
What is the difference of your pre-purchase survey , compared to your condition and value survey?
The boat is on the hard, with numerous interior panels already removed, engine and systems readily accessible. No auxiliary genset or a/c.
Lessening your duties, is there a discount?
What's your ssn and your mothers maiden name?
Just kidding on that one!
Oh, and are you a sailor? Do you own a boat? If so how long?
Did I miss anything? Will this scare them off?
