A reliable contact of mine in Sarasota says this is legitimate. These folks have been before the city council announcing they are going to do this.

Yes, unfortunately, quoting the law to a police officer is rarely the way to win his or her sympathy. Having a copy of the law with you is not a bad idea, but in the end you are probably going to have to argue your case in court. You will win, of course, but it will still cost you plenty in terms of time, money, and aggravation. They count on that.

The shaded area is the channel to the Hyatt Hotel Marina as well as what was the Quay (demolished).
