ZIKA in the Eastern Carib

Does anyone have any direct insight or experience with Zika in the EC?

We have some friends that are hesitant to visit because they plan to get pregnant soon.

I’ve read everything out there from the CDC and similar agencies. In my experience these types of information sources tend to be broad and conservative, as they should be. I’m wondering if anyone here can augment that information with practical experiences on the ground.

Are there specific areas that are especially bad, or conversely of very little concern? Do you know someone who’s been infected? Any practical tips (eg screens on hatches) that reduce risk?

Zika is there. I would heed the warnings. Skeeters are tiny by US standards. They nail your legs from the knees down. Deet is effective. Why take that chance? There are other great cruising or vacation venues.

One interesting thing is the patchwork of supposedly safe vs not-safe places.

From the CDC:

-Antigua: Has Zika
-Guadeloupe: No Zika
-Dominica: Has Zika
-Martinique: No Zika
-St Lucia: Has Zika

The problem is that this stuff is vector borne, and you cannot know which vessels transported mozzies among islands, and therefore a previously safe island can be make unsafe before you get there.. If you want to get preggers and not worry about it, take your holiday elsewhere, and don't count on being lucky, 'cause the baby'd be damaged, grievously, and that also challenges relationships very strongly.

Thanks Ann, that was my thinking too. Not really logical for the virus to have skipped over certain islands.

ZIKA is down here for sure. Everyone aboard our boat has contracted ZIKA in the time we have been down here. 3 of us got it here in Grenada (in 2016) and the other 2 contracted it higher up the chain (but I forget the islands).

I live in the Southern US and it tests positive often near me. I am not sure it can be avoided being in proximity any longer. Use good practices such as repellents and timing of activities.

Re: ZIKA in the Eastern Carib

Zika is endemic throughout the Caribbean, Eastern and Western. Mosquito abatement programs are for the most part nonexistent, but even if they supposedly exist, it’s hit or miss. If the couple plans to conceive in the next 8 months, it would be advisable to defer the trip.

Interesting, of those mentioned, only the French possessions have no Zika.

Yeah, we're all dying here, there's bodies everywhere. Pretty much the zombie apocalypse.
