Re: Which is Cheaper, Cruising the Med or the Caribbean$

FWIW, insurance for American boat cost 3 times in Caribbean than what it cost in the Med for same coverage. Almost 7k USD in Caribbean for our boat, last there in 2007. About 2.6k USD for same coverage in the Med. Take that into consideration when comparing total costs for different regions. That is for cruisers, not charterers.

Five years in the Med and three months in the Caribbean, and we've found that food and drink are far more expensive in the Caribbean, boat parts are prohibitively expensive and not always available. We're heading west.

Just like anywhere you can reduce your costs if you take the time and trouble to search for the best prices. It's possible to reduce food and drink bills by half and still eat very well in France by shopping in Leader Price, Lidl and Aldi & Spain by Dia, Lidl, Aldi plus of course the weekly street markets, most towns have an everyday till noon indoor market Le Halle (France) Mercado(Spain).
Caves (Carve) in France sell wine from a petrol type pump so take your own empty plastic water bottles for refilling with wine. Some supermarkets sell from the barrel in Spain.
Ships maintenance supplies can also be kept low by thinking 'out of the box', some spares can be bought cheaper in the UK off e-bay, Allpa in Nijmegen,Holland & SVB24 in Germany either delivered free or shipped down via low cost carriers.
I recommend Sendmybag.com for low cost parcels, packages worldwide.
I hope this is helpful to you, safe cruising.

I think you are correct Irish rambler.
Just like life ashore people afloat can pick and choose their cloth according to their tastes and budgets.
