Where Would You Suggest in the Windward \ Leeward Islands

I'm currently in St Thomas (Been there done that) and St Croix is our next stop for a few months. From there we are going to travel further south and wanted to get some suggestions. I need reliable WIFI for my telecommuting job of atleast 512 kbps and I'm alergic to marinas so anchoring is a must.

Does such a place exist?

Robert and Debra.

There are a couple of nice spots on St. Lucia that should have WIFI. Rodney Bay and Soufriere come to mind. St. Vincent probably less so, but still some nice spots. Bequia and Mustique have WIFI, I believe. And if you get that far down, go to Tobago Cays Marine Park, which has to be one of the most gorgeous places in the Eastern Caribbean.

Tobagos Cays is great, but no wifi.

Our favourites are: Dominica (Portsmouth), Bequia (Admiralty Bay), the Saintes (Guadeloupe), and Antigua (English and Falmouth Harbours)

All are great spots with good anchorage and wifi. They all actually use the same wifi provider (Hothothotspot - which can be erratic, but seems to be getting better all the time)

Get Doyle's 2 guides (Windward and Leeward) and read about these places. You'll want to visit all of them.

Enjoy!

I don't have firsthand knowledge regarding the speed of WiFi hotspots accessible from a boat at anchor (we have 2 or 3 here in Nevis based at the beach bar/restaurants along Pinneys Beach). But I can tell you that my Cable & Wireless ADSL connection here at the house usually performs at about 1,600 kbps down (bits, not Bytes, just to be clear), and 340 kbps or so uploading. C & W is the most prevalent ISP in most of the British-heritage islands, so you may be OK. You'll need a good signal booster to have access from your boat.

Firsthand knowledge - You can get decent wifi on Pinney's beach in Nevis. There are at least two decent (and free) hotspots you can get to from the mooring field. (Assuming of course you have a 5 mile wifi, wirie, or similar as most cruisers do)

Of all the eastern Caribbean islands I've been to, the hardest place to get online has ironically been in the most economically advanced islands - Martinique and Guadeloupe. In most other places, if you've got a decent adapter/antenna you'll be able to find either a free or paid hotspot (eg: getting full video on skype is almost always hard to do, but voice calls are generally do-able)

Cheers,
Colin
