where to go?

I purchased a sabre 28 almost a year ago and have made a 6-7week window to try some cruising. I am located in Oriental, NC and hope to make my way down the ICW with posibly a few short pasages outside if the weather permits. My trip would start in May, how far south would you recomend going? Florida? ofcorse I would love to get to the bahamas and could possibly stretch my timeframe. What is a reasonable distance if i plan on pushing it? Any recomendations on some good places to make a short passage outside like beaufort NC to Masonboro Inlet? 5-6Knots is cruising speed.
