Re: What to pack for first time charter?

Inflatable PFD and re-arm kit. You'll need to remove the existing cartridge from the PFD and pack it separately for the airline to let you on.

Sunglasses and if you wear glasses, a spare pair of those.

A pair of beat up sneakers that you don't mind shredding on coral or wherever your wanders take you.

And the advice about taking as little as possible is good. One approach is to select a reasonably sized bag (e.g. 60L) and only take what you can fit in it as well as a small daypack.

Re: What to pack for first time charter?

It would be a good idea to pack some long sleeves and pants, insect repellent, and read up on the Chikungunya virus, which is now in the Caribbean. Do a Google search or go to the CDC travel alert web site.

My last charter I regretted not bringing more Starbucks instant coffee sticks and Oats & Honey granola bars. I function on both till the anchor is set for the nite.

Re: What to pack for first time charter?

You can always buy clothing appropriate to the area there, so I agree with all the advice to travel light clothing-wise. I would also like to have my own tool kit, as I would doubt that the one on the boat would be good. If you're planning overnight sails, you should have your tether with you, and I'd say a lifejacket. Not the cartridge/inflatable kind, because they will not let you on an airplane with yours. The ones under the seat are exempt, but ours have been disallowed.

Mosquito prophylaxis, for sure, because none of the mosquito-borne diseases are nice, and some are spread by daytime biters, like chikungunya.

Mark Twain wrote that when traveling, one should take less clothing and more money, and I think that's still how it is.

Re: What to pack for first time charter?

Regarding CO2 cartridges.

I have carried them on both US and Canadian airlines.

My last US flight was from SFO to YYC on United

Quote:
United accepts one carbon dioxide (CO2) powered inflatable life jacket as checked or carry-on baggage. The life jacket may be packed in a checked or carry-on bag or carried as a single item in lieu of a checked or carry-on bag.

Life jacket restrictions:

Up to two small non-flammable gas cylinders fitted into the life jacket and up to two small spare cartridges will be accepted.
Flares and/or flare guns attached to the life jacket are strictly prohibited and must be removed or the life jacket will not be accepted.
United Airlines - Items Prohibited From Checked Luggage and Carry-on Baggage

I print this page and declare the pfd to to a ticket agent. They usually have to do some checking. Then the luggage goes throug oversize baggage where it is x-rayed.

I also fly Air Canada and Westjet in Canada with a pfd and cartridges.

Check with you airline. Print the the appropriate page. Declare the pfd.

Re: What to pack for first time charter?

Less clothes...yes, yes, yes.

Here is my packing strategy:

First: Each person brings a carry-on with personal essentials, swimsuit, and shorts/button up short-sleeve shirt. In case your checked bag gets delayed, you do not want to give up a day or two of your sailing trip by waiting at the marina for your bag. So be ready to set sail with just your carry-on bag. You do not want to bring any more clothing than what's in your carry-on. Button-up shirts are more comfortable/versatile than t-shirts. Bring a hat.

Second: I pack a duffle with snorkel gear. Yes, charter boats include snorkel gear, but the quality and maintenance is usually low. I love snorkeling, so it's worth it to me to bring my own gear. If I'm leaving the same airport with a traveling companion, I can fit two snorkel rigs in one bag. (If you ignore this advice, at least thoroughly check the mask and fins that the charter company gives you before you leave the harbor.) I have one or two people on the trip bring a tarp and ropes/bungies. The purpose of the tarp is to create a breeze funnel/rain cover for deck hatches. Makes time in bed much more pleasant. The tarp can be packed in the same duffel, around the snorkel gear.

Bring some recorded music. Find out what type of playback system the boat has, or bring your own.

Tool kit: I don't take them. The boats have basic tools. If you can't fix it with basic tools, call the charter company and they will send somebody out to fix it for you. Charter vacations are too short and expensive to spend time fixing somebody elese' boat.

Attitude: Once you set foot in the airplane, consciously switch your attitude to island time.

Don't forget your passport.

White t shirts are much cooler than the colored ones you wear at home, and don't attract as many mosquitos.

The reason for the tarps is that when you are trying to sleep or have fun in the cabin, it can get uncomfortably hot. Even if there is a fan, it will simply blow a little hot air around - not good enough. The logical thing to do is open a hatch. That will give you some fresh, cool, night air, but more would be better. When your slumbering, there's a good chance it will start raining. Maybe not hard enough at first to arouse you to action, but eventually you will get wet, wake up, and have to close the hatch. Of course you will then get hot, but now your sheets and mattress will be wet. And stay wet for the rest of the trip. So the tarp has two functions: 1) scoop the breeze and funnel it into the cabin through the hatch; 2) prevent rain from entering the hatch.

The hard part is how to set it up, especially because you haven't seen the boat you'll be using. I bring a one or two small tarps, several bungies of different lengths, some light rope, zipties, tarp grabbers. Then I Mcguyver a configuration after I've had a few cocktails at the first mooring. It's part of the fun of chartering for me; somtimes it works great; sometimes it's a flapping mess, but I always figure it out by the seond night. The whole rig should weigh no more than a couple of pounds and should not significantly increase the volume of your checked bag.
