West End, Old Bahamas Bay in the Bahamas closed???

We were in Georgetown Exuma a couple of weeks ago and ran into a cruiser that told us the whole operation was closed due to a business dispute.

The story we heard, some group appeared and filed a claim of ownership against the current operators. Court decided in favor of the claimants and they closed everything down pending decision on how they will proceed.

Just called and spoke with the marina manager who confirmed the closure but she had no details nor information on how or when things will change. She did tell me the customs office at the dock is still open and boats can tie up along the sea wall to clear in, space permitting. She suggested calling in advance if you have plans to visit West End for status.

Bottom line, call before you go.

Re: West End, Old Bahamas Bay in the Bahamas closed???

Does anyone have any recent updates on old Bahama Bay Marina?
We plan on checking in there and spending the night on the way to the Abicos in July. This really makes it convenient it would really be a pain in the butt if it was closed.

I called about 10-15 days ago and reached the dockmaster. Was told that the marina is "closed" but the customs office and dock is open for clearing on a first come, first served basis. Since there's somewhat limited space along that bulkhead and weekends the sport fishermen from FL pile in you may want to get there early or call in advance to check space. Worst case scenario, in settled weather and normal easterly winds, you can anchor off the beach and dinghy in to clear. Just make sure the anchor is well dug in or leave at least one person on board to keep watch.

I won't be heading that way for about a month so don't plan to call again until closer to the date I cross. If you're going their sooner the best thing to do is call over just before you go to get the latest.
