Hmmm,

How many times have I read in these hallowed pages that newbies should "go chartering"in order to gain experience? Gawd save us...

Wow.

Ok. never mind the flash of the really hot girl in the turquoise bikini...

There were SO many opportunities there for a brawl to ensue.

The folks on the boat at large could have been all bluster and pissy and *it's not our fault blah blah blah blah blah* and the folks getting hit, stripped of their anchors and moorings could have been REALLY righteously enraged. All the folks in the area could have watched and shook their heads and made another round of sundowners.

Instead, folks got their dinghies going, got their fending poles out, stayed calm, worked together, listened to advice from strangers in very embarrassing circumstances and sorted it out.

How really amazing and impressive. On all sides.

Wow.

I've seen this video on another site. The biggest question I have is why the sails are up. Otherwise, a lot of the "bumping" looks somewhat innocuous. I guess the guy caught a mooring pennant and was trying to free up the boat. They had deployed both the primary and a secondary anchor to try to control the boat. While I would have had a fender out pretty quickly I don't see where they would have done any good.

In the end, there's a lot of arm chairing, which I have been guilty of in the past with other accidents. But with this one, I don't see a lot of real harm done to anything except the captain's pride.

It's one of the things we love about all y'all over there in the colonies

. I think the responses would have been quite different in the Solent!

(Having said that, I'm eternally grateful to the chap who quietly pushed my stern back in with his dinghy after a slightly botched attempt to raft up in the Medina with inexperienced crew).

I've seen some funny maneuvers, but that takes the cake! Looks to me like they were up in Anegada, as lots of boats were on anchors, and the shore's so flat.

I noticed they were flying the Jolly Roger. Maybe it was a botched Pirate attack.

Interesting that none of the other boats had fenders out before (anti-theft?) or during this event. Obviously fender boards on top of a couple of tyres not (yet

) common in those parts.

To be honest, to my eyes doesn't really seem that much of a drama - no point running around like a headless chicken, sometimes just got to go with the flow and make it up as one goes along.

But my comparative benchmark may be lower than others

Reminds me of Fleet Week on the SF Bay when the current reverses....you don't want to be anchored anywhere near that crowd.

Yessss. . .

The English sailors are mostly extremely friendly and helpful. But they are immensely proud of being the best sailors in the world and can sometimes be very snotty in the presence of what they perceive to be a lower level of skill than what they imagine themselves to possess.

A few weeks ago I overslept in Yarmouth during a spring tide with extraordinarily high atmospheric pressure pushing the tide down. I woke up with the tide rushing out and about 6 inches of water left under my keel. To depart the pontoon uptide would have meant running directly aground; no time to rig springs. Staying there would have meant being aground at the pontoon. That left a risky downtide departure as the only option. My boat draws eight feet!

I was portside-to facing downtide out to sea. I put the rudder hard over to port, threw off the lines, engaged forward gear, held down the starboard bow thruster, and applied lots of throttle. I thought the sailors on the boat berthed downtide from me on the pontoon (flying a blue ensign) were going to have a conniption fit. Certain that I would crash right into them, they scrambled around deck in a panic, grabbing fenders, getting ready to fend me off with main force (considering my 20 tonnes of displacement, good luck to them). But by design -- which they evidentally didn't understand -- port rudder and starboard bow thruster and plenty of throttle pushed me sideways right off the pontoon and I cleared them easily, despite the rushing tide. The other skipper, red-faced, gave me a stern lecture, as I passed by, about how I should have unberthed uptide, the tone of his voice expressing a different message -- don't I understand a damned thing about handling a yacht? I just smiled and waved as I passed by.

I guess it could have happened anywhere, but it somehow seems typically Solent.

I love the capacity folks have for drama... I like to call that a "Non-Event"

When everyone gets all up in arms about what "COULD HAVE HAPPENED!!!"

when in reality, nuttin did...

The news media lives on those occasions...

It seems as if it would have made more sense for the guy ta holler *Hey, nice job buddy* and waved with a smile since your expert handling saved him grief...

but no... easier to get all unbridged about what didn't happen.

That is part of why the video impressed me... It was not quite a non event and I am sure the folks cut loose from their anchor and dragged were NOT happy campers... but no one seemed to take any real harm or damage and everyone dealt calmly with the actual events, instead of the non event that didn't happen...

hurmmmm. I think my double negatives just caught up with me and bit me in the ass...

ouch.

oh well, you know what I mean ; -)
