I had mine pulling into a finger when a stiff breeze across my beam caught me. I didn't hit anyone but judging by the audience I was pretty entertaining. It didn't help when the guy I asked to give my bow a shove interpreted my request to mean tie me to that ring on the dock.

is it just me, or does there seem to be an inverse correlation between sailing ability and the propernsity to fly the jolly roger?

Nope. I'm pretty sure Capt Jack Sparrow could have done better than the guys in the video clip, but maybe not :-)

I'd like to think we'd all do better (or not get ourselves into such a pickle) but it sure provides some entertainment on a sunny afternoon, and there for for the love of God, could go any one of us.............

Nice no one got upset, and everyone (except the cameraman) chipping in to help.

Oops, I was thinking of getting the one that says "Hand Over the Booty"

I guess I best nix that idea. Being too poor to own a boat in some folks opinion, I thought maybe I'd be tossed a gold coin once in a while.

Been thinking the same...Never seen experienced cruisers fly the jolly...

Not so sure about that: It was not bad luck or an act of God or Santa Claus, but rather pizz poor judgement getting close to other boats with sails up and not knowing how to prepare for anchoring or how to maneuver.
Guess I was chicken when I was learning: I stayed far away from other boats and never hit anybody. Not rocket science, just a tiny bit of common sense.

One thing sailing has taught me is it is better to be a spectator then a spectacle.

Re: Watch out for this guy in the B.V.I.'s

Common Sense is not so common. That looked like a really crowded anchorage, personally not my style, too many boats in too small a space. I do believe he should have doused his sails long before he got to that area.

Re: Watch out for this guy in the B.V.I.'s

It occurred to me it may have happened this way; they were under power but snagged the anchor bouy and so killed the engine, then put up the sails in an attempt to pull loose.

Re: Watch out for this guy in the B.V.I.'s

Yep, there we were in the carribean, an hour before dark, comfortably anchored in a pretty tight anchorage with a few other boats. All of a sudden in comes a charter boat at probably 5 knots, motors up the space between me and another boat without looking around at all, drops the anchor and starts partying. By the time the boat settles down his stern quarter is tapping my beamside. Asked nicely to move he refuses. "oh everythings fine, we'll watch it". Yeah...right, it'll be me up at 3 am fending off... we just moved into deep water. Not all charterers are like that at all.... but there are plenty of bad apples in the bunch.

All the folks in the area could have watched and shook their heads and made another round of sundowners.

Instead, folks got their dinghies going, got their fending poles out, stayed calm, worked together, listened to advice from strangers in very embarrassing circumstances and sorted it out.

How really amazing and impressive. On all sides.

Wow.

Well said Sara

You could be right, maybe that's how it happened.
