Wanted: Full Service Yard - Florida East Coast

I'm going to be sailing my Hunter 30 back to the U.S. this March from the Bahamas and am looking for a boat yard that can do some through hull work as well as install a wind generator. Ideally, I'd like to be able to do some minor maintenance myself as well, but can live without that if necessary.

I used Indiantown several years ago, but would prefer something with more on site work available.

Would prefer something no farther north than the Melbourne, Cape Canaveral area.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Crackerboy is a good choose. With your boat you can haul out any place. Most yards are not very busy. I use Scorpion's in Port Canaveral, primarily because they have a travellift that can handle my beam. It used to be Full Service only, now they will let you do some of the work yourself. Plenty of quality craftsmen around the Canaveral area. You'll have no problem finding people to help you.

Is that the (former?) Lauderdale Marine Center, or Broward Marine?

LMC is up the New River just south of Bradford's and Roscioli's. Broward Marine is down near the Dania cutoff.

There are a number of full service yards in Ft. Lauderdale. I'd suggest Riverbend Marina as they seem to have more sailboats than power boats. LMC, Roscioli, Bradfords, and others are more megayacht geared although all of them will take your money.

You can also try Playboy Marine, one of the last do it yourself yards in South Florida. They have shops on premises or you can get someone in to do the work. IMO, Playboy's probably the cheapest yard around.

Butch Risker is now GM of Universal Marine, which is on the property of the former Fort Lauderdale Shipyard on State Road 84.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I had the impression playboy was more oriented to: do the work and get you boat out of there..

The cape marina was another than came up. Anyone had any experience with them?

The Triton Vol.7, No.8
Good news Gord. However, I see the former Lauderdale Shipyard out my bridge windows every day. So far, aside from weeds growing, nothing has been done with the land.

Playboy wants you in and out, judging by the price schedule. They are primarily a self service yard but have a few skills on site and you can get outside contractors to do the work. From your OP, it sounded like the work you needed done was neither excessive nor prolonged. The only bad thing about getting into Playboy is that the water gets a bit thin (generally 7' most times).
