Right now if you want to visit Cuba there are many legal ways. There's a constant stream of freight from the Gulf states, legally. And visits for religious and charitable purposes. If you really MUST GO, read up, others are doing it.

We are looking to go to Cuba via the Bahamas this season (May-ish 2011), probably down to T&C then jump off to the E end of Cuba and either go N then up to the Keys or if we have time S and go via Caymans.

Anyone else with similar plans ?

My understanding is that American law says that you can not "trade with the enemy".
You must convert $500 or so to Canadian or Panamanian money, keep the receipt from the bank and claim that you only spent the foreign money in Cuba and you are lega.

ROFLMAO, doesn't anyone speak YnGlitch anymore? If you cannot "trade" with the "enemey" you cannot exchange ANYTHING with them. Doesn't matter who printed the money, doesn't matter if you use a Carte Blanche instead of a MasterCard. Which of a "no trade" is the confusing one?

You can find many first-person reports on the internet, and State Department proclamations, instead of nonsense.

Basically if you are caught coming back from Cuba, you will be asked to prove how you managed to stay there without spending ANYTHING in ANY FORM and you will be searched for contraband. "The nice folks let me stay for free and fed me" just won't cut it.

Why not do it the safe way and apply for permission to visit based on the legal reasons? (Yes, that's possible too.) Why risk having your boat confiscated and left to rot at the auction dock while you try to raise bail? To see some nice people with a failing 1950's timewarp and a military governmen they got suckered into accepting?

Damn expensive vacation for an American.

I am Canadian, thinking of going to Cuba from Florida and back with an American friend (my boat, not U.S. registered).

Am Canadian with Canadian flagged boat. May of 2010 returned from Cuba. Brought a US citisen back . He had been stranded there off a Aus boat, Had engine problems. He went through a 4 hour interigation to verify his story. Was told that if had not been an emergency he would have broken the law and be in serious trouble.

avb3, the reality is that it is still illegal for a US Citizen to travel to Cuba without Treasury Dept. permission, no matter what form of transportation. The current Administration seems to have other issues on their hands and have not been as aggressive as the previous Administration. The problem with your friend will surface when you come back to the US and clear in. Chuck

The rule has been no direct travel to Cuba from USA, that's why USA citizens always go to Canada then fly to Cuba. By USA rules, sail to Mexico, Caymans, Bahama's, etc.
