US => PR Crossing

Please know that I am a very novice sailor. In trying to set plans, I received this in an email from the Captain of the boat. She's a 40'er. ""going off-shore from Chesapeake down to PR. Problem there is passing through the Horse Lats."" <<<< what are the Horse Lats ??
Google just makes equine references Thanks in advance....be well..Kat

Thanks Mark, but is there a window of time with that 'now is a good time to go'? Captains coming down from Halifax shortly and I'm hoping to get back on board. That route is one he's been thinking about. Quite frankly, I'm a little concerned about hurricane season.

Freespirit - you should be concerned about the hurricane season; Mark posted a "winkie" to indicate sarcasm but that is easy to miss (bad boy, Mark!). If you look at today's NOAA chart at National Hurricane Center you'll understand, as tropical storm "Irene" has the whole island of Puerto Rico in a hurricane watch (or was it warning?) zone.

Re: US => PR Crossing

Not to split hairs with the title of your thread on crossing from the U.S. to PR . . . but PR is part of the U.S.

I would not go on that route with an unknown skipper, and not until after early nov.
