Tulum Mexico Sailing

First time post on CF so go easy! I took my wife to St Martin on our honeymoon that included two different trips on a catamaran...she fell in love! I'm now trying to convince her that we should put together a 15 year plan to sail away for good in our late 40S/early 50s.

With that being said, every vacation we go on involves trying to find a chance to sail a catamaran to help build my case for the plan. We are going on vacation to Tulum, Mexico the week ending October 10th. I have searched all over the internet for charters, but have not had any luck. I've searched on CF and only found that the reef and anchorage can be a PIA. We really don't want to drive two hours north to Cancun only to board a sailboat to sail down to Tulum.

Any one have any advice or helpful hints? We also wouldn't mind meeting up with any owners if they happen to be in the area!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Josh

Anywhere from Tulum will be a drive, but check in puerto Morelos there are a few day sail cats there. I don't believe you'll have a whole lot of luck finding a boat in the area that isn't a booze cruise though.

Even as a last resort a booze would be better than nothing! On our second day in St martin we did a booze cruise that after talking with the captain ended up letting me drive the cat, taught us how to reef, and many other things. My motto is to always make the best out of everything!

If no one rents catamarans, or any other boats for that matter, out of Tulum(based on your research --- good for you), what other choices do you have?

Really.

I was there years and years ago and don't recall any reasonable harbors and recall seeing and later reading about the encircling reef and its narrow entrance. No "harbor" that I recall, either, just a small backwater good enough for a few rowboats.

Re: Tulum Mexico Sailing

I've been on this boat:

Catamaran to Tulum Tulum Catamaran: BLUE MAGIC Raiatea is the Biggest Catamaran in the Caribbean Sailing Boat Tours in Puerto Aventuras to Tulum 100% SAIL on the Mayan Riviera Cancun Playa del Carmen Cozumel Quintana Roo Yucatan Mexico Day Trips Canc

They sail to Tulum, and have a pickup point not far from there that backs up to the beach with a camp ground.

I took a bus down from cancun, to Puerto Aventura where they berth, and a bus back to Cancun.

Tulum is very cool. The area where they drop off with a panga ride to the beach is nice too. Playa Zazil Kin.

I used to run a sailing charter cat, so I take any chance I can to play the tourist on one...

Cheers,

Zach

Re: Tulum Mexico Sailing

It has been years since I was there, but IIRC, Cozumel has (had) a charter outfit... short hop to Tulum
