Tarpon Springs FL to Carrabelle FL

I'm planning on leaving first light thursday morning for the first step of my jump around the NW coast of Florida. I'm planning on Crystal River for night number one. I'm a little anxious as this is my first real open water sail. The boat is a Grampian 26. Any advice? I'm single-handed with no auto pilot or wind vane, hence the longer route...

North West of Bayport in 4-15 ft of water are a lot of small (10-30ft wide) rocks (??) covered with barnacles. Sort of our version of coral heads I guess.

Not a lot of them but it only takes one.

I don't know how far north they extend.

I looked into Crystal River a little while back. I found the video below to be really helpful. Hope it helps.

Stay way offshore.... lottsa skinny water up that way in close. FWIW, unless you want to see Manatees, I'd overnight at Cedar Key or Tarpon Springs instead.

We have been that way many times (living in Destin, FL) and the water is skinny! If any winds build up, the waves pick up quickly and come from all directions. We prefer Tarpon Springs area over Cedar Key. You can anchor towards mouth of the River and take dinghy ride over to park. Drawback is it's a long way into Tarpon Springs. We took the boat all the way up the river and had a wonderful time in Tarpon Spr.! Wonderful Greek food!

Re: Tarpon Springs FL to Carrabelle FL

I'm making the same trip soon. Very interested in this discussion as I was going to start a thread on the same topic.

I've been studying the areas almost daily for several weeks now. It seems with even my 4' 8" draft there are very few places to safely anchor along the way. I'm looking forward to the experience but will be singlehanded in my first offshore cruise with eight months owning the boat and about 100 hours on the water. I think I'm pushing the envelope for my experience level but a fellow's got to start somewhere.

I was thinking, Gulfport (near Tampa Bay) to Anclote Key (Tarpon Springs area), then to Cedar Key, then to St. George Bay (Carabelle).

Both Crystal River and Steinhatchie River look like a challenge to me.
