Re: Surfing in the Caribbean

I'm stuck in the Med, winds wrong to get to Gibraltar for a few days yet, got a new 5'9'' mini-simmons good to go... Surf research is all I've got to do.

I've found a few potential Caribbean surf spots where anchoring is a possibility near by. If anyone has any experience/info on these or other breaks (that they don't mind spilling the beans on, PM if you prefer...) please fill us in.

Cane Garden Bay, Tortola
Barbuda - ****allya
St Martin - Wilderness
Martinique - north side of peninsula on east coast, anchor: Tressor Bay

Re: Surfing in the Caribbean

When conditions are right there is good surfing all over, these were taken at the entrance to Falmouth Harbour in Antigua earlier this year (see 2013 Trip Blog and Diary 2013-02-12 for more pictures on that day).

Re: Surfing in the Caribbean

On Barbuda Palmetto Point (****allya), Its best to approach the island from the North as there are plenty of reefs to the south, and with out good charts or local knowledge, you may be in trouble.
I had a Barbudan aboard when I approached the island from Antigua on the south.

I didn't surf, but I did find anchoring off the beach just north of palmetto point was quite pleasant. It was easy anchoring in the sand and well sheltered by the island with little swell.

Have you read this site?

Re: Surfing in the Caribbean

Rubikoop,
Nice article, thanks for posting it.

As for myself, I head out from NC 3rd week of Nov. Either Bahama bound or BVI and Spanish Virgins, just letting the weather be my guide.

We anchored in cane garden on a small day. 'Twas not very comfortable. Would be ok if you slept on land. The rest of the time we would hitch hike or cab ride to the breaks from more sheltered anchorages.

Re: Surfing in the Caribbean

Apparently there is a lot of good surf on the east coast of Eleuthera, which is open Atlantic water. Have not tried-- but intend to soon!

Re: Surfing in the Caribbean

You guys are making me feel pretty lucky to be in Banderas Bay this winter. Lots of good waves that I can dinghy to or just paddle to.
