Summer on Cape Cod, Who Knew ?

I've been coming to Cape Cod just about every summer for 60 years, always renting a small house for a week or two in Provincetown, Truro, or Wellfleet and paying thousands of dollars to spend a few hours a day at Long Point or Great Island.
Who knew you could come out here to Great Island and just drop your hook and stay as long as you like for free? I'm 200 yrds of the most beautiful spot on the cape.
You've got to love this cruising life.

Sounds good Lorenzo, but then your missing out on the 99 degree temps we've been enjoying down here.

Perfect beach weather here.
Hi to Marsha.

We just got back from a week sailing around Wellfleet and Provincetown, and I always have the same reaction: we get all THIS to ourselves? No one on Great Island, maybe a few people strolling on Long Point. A few transient cruisers and a few motorboat daytrippers. Beautiful harbor waters for swimming and sailing and fishing. Bluefish and tautog to be had for the taking. Whales to be seen, for free. [We also got to see a big ocean sunfish this year.] . . . Town an easy dinghy ride away. It's paradise.

We used to take rental vacations on the Cape, and the money we've saved by boat-vacationing over the last 6 summers has paid for the boat. Plus we've taken the boat many other places . . . places we couldn't have afforded to vacation otherwise -- Maine, Bahamas, etc.

I always wonder why more people don't do it this way. But . . . no need to tell them now, is there? Don't want to draw a crowd.

Where exactly is Great Island?

While I don't own a boat yet, my Dad has some Waverunners that we use and I'm always looking for a new place to go. Been to P-town, Wellfleet, Barnstable Harbor and even up to the entrance of the Canal - all from Sesuit Harbor in Dennis. Great Island seems like a cool place to check out.

If it wasn't for the Sharks, we'd head out on the souther side too - Been to Martha's Vineyward once and Monomoy a number of times to see the seals. Just have to stay on the southern end since we're limited on where we can go.

I think Sea Life will be heading up that way in a year or so and I'd love the Lat and Longitudes of some of these great places you're talking about

Matrix,

Great Island is the western edge of Wellfleet Harbor, just south of P'town. Lots of sand!

Great Island anchorage 41 54.422 70 03.656
Long Point Ptown 42 01.898 70 10.348
Both are fabulous, about a mile in protected water from town, shopping, theatre, restaurants, jaw dropping beaches, on and on.
We've been here since July 4th and will stay through Labor Day

We can drink. But from my experience not like an Aussie! In the States anyone who can drink like that gets commited for "help".

Ah.. thanks.

Is that the spot that becomes more of land mass at low tide? I've been there if it is.

There is a large sand bar at the southern end that used to be an island and you can camp on it, but it's all sand. The two islands closer to Wellfleet have forests, salt marches, trails, and oysters just sitting on the beach at low tide calling out to you.
