Stingaree Marina on the ICW Outside Galveston

Anyone know if this little Marina has enough draft for us (4'6 sailboat 34 ft long) We plan to anchor at Bolivar road but if we can leave from this Stingaree Marina instead we could make Sabine pass in daylight hours.
Active captain has a little bit of info, hoping someone was recently there or have been there this time of year.
Thanks
Erika

Re: Stingaree Marina on the ICW Outside Galveston

We tied up next to the bait dock there with the same draft. It was a little sticky leaving in the morning but doable. There is a trick to getting over the bump at the edge of the ICW, but I can't remember exactly what side to stay on. The owner of stingaree keeps his Fischer motor sailer there, so it's even possible to carry more draft in if you have intimate knowledge of the place.

We were there late July 2013. Spent the night tied up to the bait dock. Stuck in the mud. Took some help from the guys who work there to get us back into the channel. (Should not be a concern for you, our boat "Make Me Laugh" was a 32' Hunter that draws 5'10").
Good luck to you. We spent 29 days from Corpus Christi, Texas, to Tampa, Fl. in July and August 2013. Contact me directly if you have specific questions. Neils1958@gmail.com

Stingaree Marina on the ICW Outside Galveston

Been there a few times on the land yacht to scope things out. The guy who runs the bait shop and fuel dock lives aboard in a little pocket cruiser in the marina. Says that the inner basin is only between 3' and 4' but the finger with the owner's boat is where they put deeper draft vessels up to 6'. He said that the entrance from the ICW can shoal around the corners so don't cut either of them. I've read several blogs of folks staying there that have had varying degrees of success with that shoaling so I would go slow coming in. Im sure you know this since you are familiar with the area but possible backup plans could be the basin at Steve's Landing or Laguna Harbor, which is a nice anchorage, but both require going back westbound for a bit. I would for sure choose Laguna Harbor over anchoring out near Bolivar and all its commercial traffic. Definitely post a report here or on ActiveCaptain of what you find since recent accounts are a little slim.

Re: Stingaree Marina on the ICW Outside Galveston

Stayed at Stingaree last night. Very skinny water but doable. The dock is great, very strong and stable. I added a write up on active captain, wish they allowed pics. Stingaree only charged us $15. No electric or water, though we saw some hook ups for it. Fuel dock but no diesel, unleaded gas only. Heavy tow traffic and boat ramp traffic but very little wake. Getting out took about 1/2 hour of reversing here and there trying to find the little channel we came in on( draft restriction too narrow to turn boat around).
Approach: stay in ICW till parallel to stern of owners boat and no wake float.. Sharp turn into Marina, Keep "no wake" float to your port but don't stray to far from it. I will post pics tonight of approach. Owners boat is a fisher canoe stern pilothouse sailboat. Pretty vessel. We tied up to the finger pier off the fisher's starboard side.

Cheers
Erika and Brian

Re: Stingaree Marina on the ICW Outside Galveston

Sorry I missed this when you posted. We got in, but got stuck trying to get out, just like you. We gave Stingaree a miss on the way back. That was the only place we got stuck between Texas and Georgia, so you should be "good to go" from here on.

We are so happy you are on your way. Enjoy the journey!

Awesome, thanks for the write up! Do you recall depths? Would 5' even have made it in?

We made it in with a 5' draft. Erika's review is shown here - https://activecaptain.com/X.php

Don't forget Google maps! I forgot all about it, would of helped us. Doesn't show the owners Fisher sailboat or the no wake marker.
