Well. There goes the neighborhood... Last time I passed through St.Helena was in 2012 en route to Fernado de Norha, Brazil. The island will now hopefully upgrade infrastructure - indeed it must - with the unavoidable rise in the number of visitors to the island. Stunning views and a history centered on Napolean Bonaparte who was imprisoned (under house arrest) there until he died. Hope it doesn't lose it's uniqueness and the qeues aren't too long in the future. They were bad enough, especially at the bank, in 2012. Well worth a visit.

Re: St Helena island airport, first flight in

looks like the RMS St Helena from july 2016,(the ship that is its only commercial link to the rest of the world) will be going out of service, making the island reliant on air cargo for resupply and passenger services.

Wow...

That is definitely news.... I'm sure it will be some time before the island loses it's "uniqueness"... If ever...

Re: St Helena island airport, first flight in

We loved St Helena. It was one of our favourite stops in our circumnavigation. I think only being connected by sea with the rest of the world resulted in a very friendly, relaxed place. It certainly is the only place we stopped where the customs officer gave us some cake she had made and brought to work that morning. I fear that it will become just another island and lose much of its charm. The airport does give the British a strategic presence in the South Atlantic and eliminates the high cost of running the RMS. Now the locals will be on the hook for the entire cost of air travel and commercial freighters bringing in needed bulk cargo.

Re: St Helena island airport, first flight in

Landed a 6' wahoo on deck as we were closing on St Helena in 84. It got a hold of my foot and very nearly bit it clean off. The doctor who had rotated in for a nine month stint was a renowned podiatrist. It was like Christmas for him and a Godsend for me. Two months later and we had a send off like few other places we'd visited. Fond memories. There will now be the option of getting flown out in an emergency... There will be great changes ahead, good and bad no doubt.

looks like there will be connecting flights via Luanda, angola which is the shortest over the water route.

I'm not sure how long the runway is,and if it will be able to cater to larger aircraft

good write up here, currently lanseria airport Johannesburg is running the flights, xpected to be around 700 return

Re: St Helena island airport, first flight in

Was in St Helena last month. Our "tour guide" indicated that the airport will be open in February.

The "first plane" was doing calibrations. There are new docks being built which will also for other large boat traffic. It is being built as part of the airport deal.
