St Croix

Has anyone been to St Croix? I am sitting just off Gilligan's Island, South Coast of PR and am thinking of hopping to St Croix on my way to the rest of the Eastern Caribbean.

Any insight or info gratefully received.

I've been there several times and have always stayed at Green Cay marina. That's a relatively long run from Gilligan's so I'd be inclined to recommend that you proceed eastward along the south coast of PR, possibly staging for departure at Vieques. See Active Captain for anchoring information if you prefer that to a marina.

Re: St Croix

We anchored off Frederiksted at N 17 43.0’ W 064 53.2’. There was only one other vessel anchored there at the time and he had been anchored on the same spot for months. Good dock to leave a dinghy at except on "Cruise Ship Day". Take a cab to the airport if you want to rent wheels.

Re: St Croix

I was a liveaboard in St. Croix years ago.
The entrance to C’sted can be a bit tricky, but was well marked.
I was docked at Salt River Marina most of the time, tricky entrance between reefs and was not marked years ago.
Good bar hopping at the boardwalk in C’sted.
Crime is and was high, the idea was to have 2 of everything, one for yourself and the other one for the locals to steal.
Had my car broken into once. (Boat was burglarized in St. Thomas while on the hard in a working boat yard.)
Great snorkeling at Buck Island. Anchor right there, enjoy nature and skip town.

Re: St Croix

We anchored not near town, one day wanted to walk into town. A lady stopped in her car and warned us to not walk due to crime. Gave a ride back to the bay.

Did anyone carry on East from there? Maybe jumping to Saba?

Re: St Croix

Salt River Marina and bay is great and the guys from Gold Coast Yachts have their shop there too.

Very competent on multihulls and wood epoxy construction as well as composites.

Ride to town might be a challenge, but there might be public transport these days.

Saba is an absolutely beautiful island, but you won't want to stay there for very long (very rolly most of the time). Have a nearby island like St. Maarten to retreat to that offers a bit more comfort. Saba is a pretty small island, and you probably won't end up needing to stay very long to do everything you want anyway.

I personally love the Anguilla, St. Maarten, and St. Bart's area. Plenty to see and do, and each island is so close yet completely unique.
