It's been many years(the 80's)since I was in FL. so I don't know if it holds true now but FL. has county campsites that are real cheap at least they were then ) and they are all over the place , they are fenced in and have good showers. good luck

I don't think the OP was talking about literally camping in a campground...he wants to live on a boat but in a "camping out" manner vs. luxury, since he doesn't have much to spend.

Even camping at the state parks can be tough in the Keys. Many parks are filled December and January. Everybody is looking for someplace warm. Hopping over to the Bahamas will be expensive with a $300 clearance fee. Best of Luck

The Key West mooring field is nice enough, but a bit of a dinghy ride to the dinghy dock and it's exposed to the north so gets quite rough if the wind is out of the north!

Good to know, thanks. I'm planning on staying in Marathon but will likely head up to Key West for a week or two around spring break time.

I gues my only question regarding your plan would be, what if the boat doesn't sell in
May...? or for some time...after that?

Sail it back to DC and stay at the Gangplank marina in DC or somewhere nearby till it sells, or stay in FL if I have reliable income by then. Policies are that you are only allowed to stay there 4 nights a week so I'd have to be out of there on weekends but I can do that.

Anyone have opinions on this boat?:

1978 Catalina 30' Saiboat NICE BOAT! (fl ehle 78):eBay Motors (item 200415813608 end time Dec-15-09 16:44:33 PST)

30' Catalina looks like the final price will be under $5000 which fits my budget. States that it is in nice overall condition but the yanmar diesel is "tired".
