Southern Caribbean ?

No time for a charter, and going with some folks who aren't really into sailing anyway, but looking to spend some time in the Southern Caribbean in late Dec. or early Jan. Maybe over New Years.

Anyone want to make a suggestion for a nice island to visit, or a particular resort?

Even the "Southern Caribbean" is a pretty big place with lots of different islands/countries each with their own specialities. If you could narrow it down to a couple of islands - i.e. Trinidad, ABC, Grenada, St. Vincent, Guadeloupe, etc. then you would certainly get a number of recommendations here.

There's a wide range of places from run-down rat traps to super-expensive haunts of the rich and famous. What's your pleasure?

Not that I've stayed in any of them, bein' on the boat anchored out, but I've heard about a few.

BTW, a friend of mine has been a manager of several top level Caribbean resorts prior to coming here to Nevis to manage Nisbet Plantation. He says try the week after New Years for the best deals at that time of year. The Christmas to New Years period is highest season, so the resort and the air flights will costs much more than other times.

If you're just going to fly in and stay on one island, we really like Aruba.

Ditto what Hud said about the prices, it also applies to the crowds.

Well, that's the thing. I haven't ever been South of the Virgins so I really can't narrow it down any. We're thinking of somewhere probably South of St. Kitts. Just looking for suggestions.

We're a middle-class family, so won't be hanging out with the rich and famous, but don't want any rat-traps either.

Aruba sounds interesting. The week after New Years would work. Keep the suggestions coming and thanks!

One thing I have learned about the Caribbean is that every single island is different. Since you don't sound like doing much sailing, I'd go for the the resort, pool, food, beaches, and nightlife. Look at the tripadvisor.com website. They have recommendations and photos galore.

Antigua is my favorite Caribbean island so far. The water around it is quite shallow so the color is an amazing turquoise. There is lots to do for every budget and it seemed both safe and friendly. Definately worth researching.

Personally, I love Dominica, but not many "resorts" there. St. Lucia is a bit off the beaten path, as is Barbados.
