Going from Fort Lauderdale to Miami you will sometimes find a countercurrent due to tides.
I usually ride the current before a Gulf Stream crossing to get as much "Southing" as possible before turning East.

I lived and sailed out of Ft.Lauderdale for 12 years, almost always went outside to get to Government Cut, ( Miami ). Would sail south about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile off the beach, always had a good sail.

Going north, I would go out about 2 miles or more and ride the Gulf Stream.

+1. I am sitting off Elliot Key for a few days got here by heading out Hillsboro and motoring south (no wind and the due S wind). Ran in 60' of water about 1/2 mile or less off the beach.

Not sure what the next stop is, but when I head north - it will be 2-300' of water riding the Gulf Stream. FWIW stream seems to be more west this year. Could be bad mojo for storms!

RTB,
We've made the run outside many times. The Gulf Stream rarely runs that close to shore and if so, it is seldom less than 1-2 miles. If there is a countercurrent(very rare), it will usually be less than 1 knot. I would rather take a rough ride along the coast than to take the "River of Madness." Good luck and good sailing.

Guess I have been lucky then: Out of 50-60 voyages from Fort Lauderdale to Miami I have noticed the counter current about 2/3rds of the time.
On the way back I head East a few miles to get the Gulf Stream effect.
Once from Key West to Fort Lauderdale we clocked 9 knots on the GPS, warp speed for a CSY 33..

CSY,
As of 20 July 2015, according to NOAA'S National Data Buoy Center, the distance to the West Wall of the Gulf Stream is: 21 NM SE of Port Everglades
18 NM NE of Fowey Rocks
The information is provided by the Naval Oceanographic Office. Is this unusual? Good luck and good sailing.

Yes, very unusual, most of the time the West wall is 4-5 miles from the beach.

Don't care what they say--- hauled butt yesterday from Gov cut to Hillsboro ran about 3 miles off. SWAG 2+ kt kick for the edge of the stream ( sorry log is broke).
