Starting with just a pile of uncut lumber, two men built this nice rowboat in two hours 29 minutes, which would have been a new world record for a challenge boat if the event was sanctioned. It was incredible to watch them work, no hesitation or wasted movement. Twenty teams participated including teams from three local high schools. The teams brought their own tools, and a local plywood manufacturer donated the materials.

After the four hour building phase is completed, the teams have to put the boats in the water and row them to test for speed, points are awarded for completion time and quality, and rowing speed.

I've watched some of those quick and dirty boat competitions before, and they are fun. Sikaflex used to sponsor one, and every boat had to use the stuff. Did they then have to race them around a course like at some other competitions like that? I've often thought that some clever company could make some small cruising-sized kit boats out of plywood that would be designed to put right together in a few months in the backyard. I believe Waarschip did something like that for awhile. Don't know if they are still around.

There were several Chris Craft cruisers from the post WWII period displayed. Captain S varnish by Pettit was popular, thinned 50% for the first two coats, then 25% for successive coats, more than six in this case.

The Sikaflex Challenge, which used to be held on SF Bay. I attended several, priceless. Many competitors did not complete the course. No fasteners were allowed, only fast cure Sikaflex and clamps. Only tools which were attached to your person, ie huge tool belt, were allowed IIRC. Strategies ranged from the quick build canoe to the slow build sailing dinghy. The same guy won several years running. This was a long time ago.
