Sandy's effect on Oriental, NC

Anyone have any firsthand experience of Sandy around the Oriental area? I'm curious about any boat damage that may have occurred.

Re: Sandy's effect on Oriental, NC

Yes. I was in Whortonsville on my boat in Point Marina and slept through Sandy. We had about a 3 foot storm surge there and some wind, but nothing serious.
Oriental had surge up over Hodges street as usual but I didn't see any damage when I went into town two days later.
You may want to look at www.towndock.net and see what they had to say.

Hi Capt. Bill. What marina are you at in Whortonsville?

Here look for yourself. Might have to wait for daylight.

Re: Sandy's effect on Oriental, NC

I live in Oriental on Pierce Creek. We got water a few inches over the dock- about 4' higher than MSL and winds of 40 kts or so. Just like a bad nor'easter. If your boat had long enough dock lines to deal with the tidal surge, you should be ok.

Bill
Ah crap! I just looked up your profile and saw a larger photo of you and feel a bit foolish.
Yes, of course we met and talked when I was down there a couple of weeks ago!
Fair winds and have a great trip south!

Re: Sandy's effect on Oriental, NC

Bit off topic, but I was looking for help. I have a boat stored in Oriential and need to do a bottom job, new thru hulls etc. before I take her back to Texas. Can someone recommend a facility that would allow me to do the work myself.
Thanks,
Gerald

Re: Sandy's effect on Oriental, NC

Sailcraft will allow you to work on your boat. We have ours on the hard there now.

Sandy was a non-event for us here, just some very localized flooding that occurs on a regular basis, like in front of the Bean/town dock.
