San Juan, PR Latest Report

It has been raining all around Puerto Rico and the weather is not conductive to starting our passage to Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. We are anchored at San Juan bay and planning to leave on the 21st.

More coverage of stronger squalls persist just N&E of Leewards, and may impact Barbuda, and possibly the rest of SE Leewards today as activity moves WNW-NW.
Squalls have decreased in coverage & intensity from PuertoRico thru Coastal DomRep, but persist offshore N of DomRep, and may redevelop along Dom Rep.

Thanks Tao, the policy regarding itinerary on board my yacht is "No itinerary at all" so it is the same to me if we need to stay one month or one week waiting for a good weather window in order to make the passage both safe and enjoyable.

We are prepared if we run into unforeseen areas of bad weather though

JC, have you been or are you going to the South Coast of Puerto Rico? There are some nice spots there.

If you get the chance go to the south-east corner of the island and there's a resort of Villa's or townhouses called Palmas del Mar which is beautiful. They have a small to moderate marina and a big casino. Damn good food too. Golf course also if you play. It's awesome, I spent three weeks there and loved it. Kinda pricey but not bad if you pick and choose.

There are places in PR that are breathtakingly beautiful. San Juan - not so much. The fort is kind of cool; there are some neat back alley, outdoor, bars; good food; supposedly haunted houses; and I got my genuine Gucci watch for $10 there - I wanted a Rolex, but the guy was charging $20 for those.

With good weather the run from PR to Cartagena should be a gas. Mona Passage?

The boat's site is under construction and the designer should have it on line in a couple of months

I have been waiting for a passage for the last 3 weeks and it feels much better than flying an airliner thru real bad weather in order to meet an schedule, bye bye airlines

cdennyb I was in Fajardo, Culebra, Vieques and Culebrita and we saw some real neat places.

The marinas at San Juan are not really friendly to Sailing vessels as they all accostumed to get lots of money from the powerboat owners but one marina still let dinghies in other than that they show you you are not a wanted one and the rates for sailing vessels are incredible high but you can anchor at the San Juan Bay which is much better and free

On the sidewalk along the water front near the cruise ships - somewhere between the Sheraton and Senor Frogs. The guy has a display table and will size a watch for you on the spot.

I'm guessing that's actually Señor Frog’s, slomo, but having seen some of the "cruisers" who disembark in ports like San Juan, Senior Frogs is about right.

You're right. I tried to edit the thing and I have a tilde, but I can't figure out how to make an enye with my keyboard. I would not recommend Señor Frog’s for anyone who is not used to consuming prodigious amounts of alcohol. OTOH, my recollection of it is kind of vague.

When I want / need to type something that my keyboard doesn't offer, I do a Google search for the appropriately written word(s), then cut-and-paste into what I'm writing - just as I did with Señor Frog’s.
