Sailing to BVI from Ft. Lauderdale

Would like to leave Ft. Lauderdale around the end of November 2011 for the BVI. Does anyone have any hints or advise on best route to take? Would love some input. Have 42' Lagoon

Here's a link to a CF member's sailing blog which describes his analysis, decision and actual sailing experience for the same passage. Worth reading...

Re: Sailing to BVI from Ft. Lauderdale

We have done the trip three times, twice down the thorny path, both of which were brutal and once going straight east for 600-700 miles out to W66 or W65 and then south on the trades to St Thomas.

We went south of Providence and had to sail towards Bermuda for a couple of days and motor for a day but overall the trip was very easy.

Re: Sailing to BVI from Ft. Lauderdale

Wait for a significant frontal system (increasing after early November).
Cross the Gulfstream with south-westerlies on the back of the front and
make as much easting as possible-preferably to W65 if possible.
Always make easting, beacause the further south you go the stronger the
easterlies will be.

Fair winds,

Tony

Good tip on easting by Tony. Welcome aboard. The weather is finally cooling off here in Fort Lauderdale, eh?

I understand sometimes there is a caravan type group that crosses together. Is there anyone going around the end of Nov. that I could hook up with?

Last year strong easterlies were as far north as Cape Canaveral in January, we had a nightmare trip.
