Sailing from the US to Europe right now. What do you think about the timing?

Hi,

It's mid November and some of the autumn storms roared already across the Atlantic.
Some folks are planning to leave in the next few days (earliest this afternoon) for Europe.
Out of curiosity what do you think about the weather timing?

I had a look at Windy, the next few days look favorable. Still what do the seasoned salt backs here think about crossing from the east coast of the US to Europe at this time of the year?

Please keep this thread purely focused on the weather of the north Atlantic. Thanks.

Leaving this time of year to cross the north Atlantic I think is a trip with very high odds of encountering some serious gales. I wouldn't do it, at least from the US to northern Europe. Maybe from the Caribbean to Gibraltar but even that route is asking for trouble this late in the year.

Thanks Skip, that's what I thought too.
Will be interesting to see the concensus here after a while.

Is this question related to Greta Thunburg and Sailing La Vagabond? I personally hope they have a really good weather router.

Nope.

But I wish anyone crossing right now (and at other times) fair winds and weather.
No matter who they are.

I'm just wondering if a crossing in mid November is not a high risk.
What would be the best time of the year?

Somewhat bumpy ride anyways. Can expect two gales a week with winds about 30 to 40kt, 15 to 20m/s, but it's mostly downwind (hopefully ). I was once sailing east from the Azores this time and had a 50kt storm with 30' seas for four days. Having said that it was the best sailing time ever as the boat was 65'Swan

Short answer, dreadful.

Long answer, the jet stream over western Europe is doing odd things at the moment with a huge 'ox bow' coming down over Ireland to Gib, across Spain and back up to the Baltic. Huge amounts of wind and rain are being driven south from the normal route up over the top of Scotland to Norway.

The northern North Atlantic is no place for a small yacht in winter.

Not sure where those people want to go, but at leat in Northern Europe, most locals have their boats out of the water and winterized. There may be some warmer places in the med or Gran Canaria, but North Sea and Baltic are simply cold, wet and windy this time of the year with short days thrown in on top.

Re: Sailing from the US to Europe right now. What do you think about the timing?

the weather is still pretty good at the lattitude of the azores untill early december though headwinds and the late season hurricane that just formed might be a problem as will be their route taking them through the sargasso sea, which currently is chock full of weed in the area they will pass through.
i hope their heating works as going from the balmy 28C in the bahamas to 6-8C further north will be a bit of a shock!

Some posts have been deleted as unacceptable.

Back to the question in hand, weather in the N Atlantic at this time of year.

Professional help would needed for the person wishing bad fate upon the owners and crew leaving on a passage ... serious professional help is needed when you can’t handle the enthusiasm a 16 year old girl has for the environmental issues mankind has caused.

Glad CF gives me the possibility to block any future posts from people like you and I have the pleasure knowing that a reply by you will not reach me.

I cannot find my copy of Jimmy Cornell's World Cruising Routes. Boy there are a lot more places to lose stuff in a house than onboard a boat. But someone could see what he says. I think that at least hurricane season is over and that is surely a good thing.
