Route from Panama to Grand Bahamas

Does anyone have an opinion as to the best route from Panama to Freeport, Grand Bahamas. Also, what times of the year would be best.

Are you in a hurry or willing to take your time and sight see your way to Freeport? If you want to take a month or so work your way up the east coast of Central America, throuigh the Yucatan Channel, up the keys and cross to Freeport from West Palm.

Shortest, most direct route is north to the Windward Passage, turn left up the Old Bahamas Channel and ride the Gulf Stream to Freeport. That is the quickest, shortest route but if the winter trades are kicking up and coming out of the NE it could be a nasty beat to the Passage from the Canal. Too early in the season and you run the risk of hitting hurricane season. I would prefer late spring or late fall for the direct route.
