Rhode Island to Maine 1 week of June

Hi
Looks like I'll be closing on a 50ft catamaran in RI at the end of May

I'm from the PNW and don't know the Atlantic
If I were to go in one shot where would you suggest going for land fall in Maine

Any suggestions as to where I might be able to get a slip in Maine for the summer?

Thanks

Rockport is a very nice town with a good boatyard.

Do you plan to find a marina and stay in one place all summer?

If not, get the Taft and Rindlaub book "A Cruising Guide to the Maine Coast." Worth its weight in gold.

Thanks guys
Yes I would want one slip from June to end of August
The guide sounds like great investment anyway!

We from PNW and are also going to be cruising NE this summer including Maine. New cruising grounds for us in our new to us Lagoon 440 Bonni Jean. Perhaps we will cross paths.

Re: Rhode Island to Maine 1 week of June

Go up Buzzards Bay
Go through cape cod canal(sails down)
Go straight toward PTown(stay left)
Watch out for whales after PTown
Aim for Portland area.
Boothbay Harbor is a good mid point
Carosel Marina has slips talk to Jack(he even has apartments if need land time and also a good restaurant)
Boothbay Harbor to Monhegan Island is a good day trip and bring your dingy.
Rockland could be next stop and there is slips near Black Pearl
Camden and Rockport just up the coast but very tight on slips
Boothbay is one day to Portland or even less.

Why not stay in right in Rhode Island? The Long Island sound has some of the best sailing locations, Newport, Block Island, Montaulk NY, Nantucket, Martha's Vinyard. Just so many great locations.

I don't know! Any suggestion might require knowing your beam, I'll guess you would need something outside not a normal slip.

Hey Gilligan,

Just sent you a PM, as will be following in your wake up the east coast in July.

I just received the following from the publisher of " A Cruising Guide to the Maine Coast":

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, we have a new, sixth edition on the way, now currently at the printer. We expect to have it by mid June. I'd be happy to let you know when we have it on hand. Meanwhile, we are sold out of the older fifth edition.

Thank you for your patience and congratulations on your cat!

Curtis

As you approach the Maine coast the issue of lobster pots become a real problem. Some people ignore them and just sail right over them. I am not that brave...the water is pretty cold. As you get beyond Rockland many of the pots also have a small toggle float that doubles what you want to dance around. ....but I wouldn't sail anywhere else!

Honestly those of us in New England avoid Maine until August! If you prefer freezing temps and heavy fog then head right up! But if you want the truly best experience wait until late July! Rhode Island - Block Island - Buzzards Bay and Vineyard and Nantucket offer beauty cruising!

Belfast is an overlooked treasure.
It depends of course what you like, but a lot of the towns you hear mentioned are known because they are touristy spots.
Belfast might become that way in a few years, hopefully not, but right now it is wonderful. And Cathy, the harbor master, will work with you to find a mooring if you so desire. There are not that many slips, most people use moorings.

If you decide to come here I'll take you to a wonderful spot to have a beer...
