Margarita used to be much safer then the rest of Venezuela because of the crossing from the mainland. That's no longer true. Car batteries, tires, radios etc aren't safe. And certainly a watch or any thing approaching expensive jewelry can be a death sentence.

Remember advice I got from a Cuban national friend of mine who's first language was Spanish and was some what famous for his ability to pass for someone who could speak Spanish like a Cuban, Mexican, Colombian, and Puerto Rican. He told me it would be obvious to anyone in the third world I was rich because I wore eye glasses. This was back when I was a somewhat poor university student. Plenty of folks in Florida know someone from Venezuela who left because it is a dumpster fire where you can be killed for what most folks at CF would consider pocket change.
