Port Zante marina in Basseterre, St Kitts

My wife and I are thinking about leaving our boat at Port Zante marina in Basseterre, St Kitts for a few weeks in April while we fly back to the states. Does anyone have recent (after the hurricane) experience with this marina? Will the boat be secure? Is it protected from the weather? Can anyone recommend someone trustworthy we could hire as a “boat watcher”?

The Marina is next to the (new) Ferry terminal and the area is now more upscale than before. They have a gate and security guards that do an OK job of controlling access. The marina suffers from a good amount of surge, so securing the boat for a long period of absence is important to avoid unnecessary chafe.
I have an email address of a local boatowner at home and can e-mail to see if he might recommend someone for guardiennage.

Re: Port Zante marina in Basseterre, St Kitts

We stayed in the marina for a week after New Year's to complete some boat repairs. We experienced no surge during our time there. From what I've read there was a second construction event on the marina some time again that eliminated the surge they were receiving.

Great group of guys that work there. The guys that work on the big day charter cats are great as well.

I can personally recommend a guy named Ricky that works on the Spirit of St. Kitts catamaran. There is a gate and 24 hour guard so security is decent. Shower facilities could use a little work...

Send a message to Charles Phillip on Facebook and he will make all arrangements for your stay. He can also help ensure you get the best price possible. I found it to be better to deal with him than the head dock master with dreads.

That is good news regarding the surge - I know that some sort of construction was planned, which must have been performed with some success!

The pictures I see on the internet look like the same marina I stayed in 2002, February. Where the surge ripped off two davits from my boat.

I'd be interested in hearing any more recent reports.

I have to add that of the hundreds of nights spent sleeping aboard in different anchorages, by far the worst was anchoring outside of the Basseterre marina. Of course conditions outside can be quite different from inside, but it was a night I won't forget (I ended up giving up and weighing anchor in middle of the night that time)

We stayed there in 2011 for 3 days hiding from high winds. Wife and I explored the island until the wind calmed down enough for pleasant sailing. No problem with surge at all. The marina was secure though it feels a bit "industrial". Good security. My wife is more sensitive to such things than I am and she felt perfectly OK there.
