Oceanis 48 sunk in vicinity of Guadeloupe

Article says boat had a problem with the steering system.

Hmm. Can anyone explain the attempt to tow a sinking boat? Sure it was calm but they sure had to get off in a hurry because of that. Just can't see what point of the tow was.
