NY to Panama in March

Is it possible to get a yacht under the bridges to NY from the Long island sound? Does it cost money to get the bridges raised, any red tape etc? I heard there are downloadable cruising guides or virtual tours of the canal systems. Does anyone have a link?

How doable is it to sail south from NY in march? Not too dangerous? I assume it starts getting warmer fairly quickly further south.

Yacht would be a C&C 44.

Unless the mast on your sailboat is taller than 130 feet (40 meters) you will not have any problem.
- - Remember all the USA NOAA nautical charts are free online so you can look up such questions yourself very easily. Nautical Charts & Pubs
- - As to sailing south from New York City in the month of March you can expect to be in full winter and snow conditions with temperatures getting to below 0C. Winds and waves in the passages that need to be done in the Atlantic Ocean may be subject to Nor-easter's which are cyclonic storms that occur in the winter time. In short it is possible but you better be dressed like an Eskimo and have the experience needed to sail Tasmanian Sea type conditions.

Re: NY to Panama in March

There are no bridges to raise from Long Island Sound to NY harbor. The east river bridges are over 100 feet high.

You would have to do some offshore hops along the NJ coast and then go up the Delware bay and the canal to the Chesapeake bay. You could do it safely is you are willing to wait in port for weather windows. You can take the ICW (how deep is your draft ? how high is your mast ? ) through VA and NC, then either go offshore or continue in the ICW south of Beaufort, NC as your desire and the weather dictate.

It will be cold for several weeks, until South Carolina or so.

Re: NY to Panama in March

Thanks guys. Yes I know it will be very cold and possibly rough. But the trip can be made in 24 hour coastal hops with a weather window until warmer climates are reached. Draft is 5-6", Mast height is about 66 no I'm not so sure if Oregon inlet is feasible. Might have to keep going or head in the ICW further south for R&R depending on weather.

This is only one idea anyway. Thanks for the help guys

Re: NY to Panama in March

Wow, looked up the C&C 44 and the average mast height is about 62.5 ft to 63 ft. With 66 ft that pretty definitely negates using the Intracoastal Waterway anywhere there are fixed bridges - which is pretty much the whole thing. Don't forget you have to add in any fixed antennas and lights, etc. sticking up above the top of the mast.
- - So you would be able to do the Delaware River and C&D canal to the Chesapeake Bay down to Norfolk, but thereafter you would be "outside" in the Atlantic Ocean. And there is plenty of nasty water out there that time of year, not to mention having to round some nasty capes.
- - You might be better heading out to sea to Bermuda then the Bahamas/Caribbean before turning west to Panama.
