Re: Need suggestions for a bareboat destination

CP1, I just visited the SailCarib website and the Spanish Virgins do look very attractive.

I am wondering how the locals feel about the visiting bareboat cruisers. It wasn't too long ago that the U.S. Navy was bombing near these islands. I don't want to go sailing around in an area where the locals may not want us there.

The locals are axe murderers. I've cruised the Spanish Virgins several times and you should not go there under any circumstances. Please stay away. You'll hate it. Your kids will hate you for it. Especially stay away from the S side of Vieques, the N side of Vieques, Culebrita, the E and S and N sides of Culebra and Cayo de Luis Pena. Just move along, nothing to see here.....

Thanks Dave I suppose I deserved that and I'll add another vote to the tally for the Spanish Virgins. 👍

Re: Need suggestions for a bareboat destination

SailSC I totally agree. I do not think there are yachts available in Nuku'alofa and it is not so nice anyway. Fly up to Neiafu in the Vava'u islands. Moorings have yachts there. Wonderful cruising. Whales too. etc. etc.
If one can get down to Hapai Group or up to Niuatoputapu they are both wonderful.

Re: Need suggestions for a bareboat destination

So it seems that the forum has recommended that we consider Belize, St. Martin, Guadeloupe and the Spanish Virgins.

Thank you everyone for these suggestions. I'll start researching boats, flights and pricing and see what makes the most sense.

If anyone else is willing to give me their opinion of these destinations or provide some other favorite spot, I do appreciate it.

Cheap flights to PR too.

Good luck.
+1 on Puerto Rico / Spanish Virgin Islands / SailCaribe! That's where we have our boats. There are great beaches, diving, snorkeling, free moorings, bars, and a few great restaurants. There are nowhere near the number of bars and restaurants as the BVIs but you can find completely empty white sand beaches.

You will find that flights to Belize tend to be spendy.

I recommend, in parallel, that you get some cruising guides for the regions you're considering - and not the guides given out by the charter companies. Objective guides like those by Stephen Pavlidis will answer all your questions such as those you posed here plus a lot more to help you decide what suits your desires best. THEN come back here and ask specific questions to those who have been where you're considering going to get confirmation/contrary opinions. Keep in mind that detailed, shore based info in cruising guides can become dated quickly, but info regarding weather, navigation, etc. remains pretty reliable. As Don Street said, "rocks don't move."

Re: Need suggestions for a bareboat destination

Thanks to all for the advice. I will certainly do my due diligence but using the experience found on this forum to quickly narrow the list to places worthy of consideration is invaluable. I'm already getting excited!

Re: Need suggestions for a bareboat destination

I now have our trip booked and our group is going to Puerto Rico to bareboat around the SVI.

Can anyone recommend the best paper charts to cover this area?
How about which charts I should purchase for download into INavX?

I enjoy planing ahead.

Re: Need suggestions for a bareboat destination

Hi Larry, we are considering placing a vessel in SC in Puerto del Rey. Do you have any words of wisdom or caution?

Make sure your insurance covers you for hurricanes.
