Re: Mosquito Holes

50-50 Skin So Soft/water works well for no-see-ums. As far as mosquitos, doesn't anybody besides me use coils any more?

I lived in Fla. for 40 years and these are what worked forcc me.
The Skin-So-Soft oil mixed 20% sss/h2o, soak your outerwear & nets in this, any tents too. A bowl w/ a sponge soaked in citronella oil for the porch/cockpit. Use SSS regular on your skin. I also have found for me personally eating a cap of brewers yeast a day helps me repel mosquitoes naturally. No seeums don't care about the yeast. They do however respect the SSS, though you will smell girly all the time ....... which is a sight better than some of guys ........

Re: Mosquito Holes

I was so dissappointed to get to Hawaii and still found mosquitos. Real paradise doesn't have 'em.

Re: Mosquito Holes

Oh well, I guess that puts us out of the running in the paradise contest, too. If you're anywhere in FL right now, you're chances of finding a place w/o them is pretty much nil (mosquitoes ARE our state bird, you know). Up around the Space Center where I am, the skeeters will pick you up and carry you home to their nest. Haven't seen too many on the river, but I haven't been out late in the day for a while. Going out on Fri. to a mangrove island with a bunch of kids. Fully expect to donate blood. Just hope to avoid the deer flies (yellow flies). Those things don't quit until you kill them!

Re: Mosquito Holes

IR3535 is an insect repellent and bio-pesticide found in Skin so Soft and can be more effective than Deet. However, I don't know how much of it is in Skin so Soft or how effective Skin so Soft is. I do know that Deep Woods Off is quite effective with mosquitoes and flies and I have found Cutters to be very effective against Black Flies and mosquitoes. If I remember correctly Cutters came in different strengths and the stuff I used up north when canoeing came in very small bottles. It was formulated for the US Military.

Re: Mosquito Holes

this may not be relevant but in Grand Cayman they introduced two million sterile male mosquitoes and that lead to zero mozzies last summer!

Re: Mosquito Holes

Where I am now, in a slip on the ICW in NC, there are no mosquitos. Off the boat, close to the greenery, they a horrible. I tend to stay on the boat a lot.
Watch out when you are in other countries. There are different types of mosquitos. When I started staying in Mexico I was eaten alive quite a few times. I noted being bitten by black and white striped mosuitos once when I first got there. The bites didn't heal. Turned into little sores that got deeper....never mind the details, you get the idea. I went to the local doctor and he gave me an injection and a scrip for some antibiotic cream. fixed the problem. I asked why the other people there weren't thus affected and the doc said they were immune, (amigos, he said), but that I was fresh meat. I still, eight years later have a little white dot on my chest that doesn't tan from one of the bites.
