Mosquito free anchorage/island?

In your opinion what anchorage would you go to if you did not want to be bothered by mosquitoes?

Which single anchorage in the whole world? At any time of year? That's a pretty large area to cover - expect a long list.

Pretty much any anchorage on the US East coast North of Georgia in January would do.

Yea, where in the Atl/Carib?

I'll answer for the Bahamas and E Carib >> your boat can be mosquito free in any anchorage if you anchor far enough off shore and in a breeze. For the few that may still find you, screen all windows by dusk and leave then screened until after dawn. This has worked for us.

"How far is offshore?", you ask. Far enough. You have to experiment and it'll vary based on how much breeze and what kind of shore is upwind of you.

Any of the Greek Aegean islands. I don't think we have needed to use our mosquito nets since we left the hardstand a year and a half ago. Being on land (or as others have mentioned, close to land) when there is stagnant water present while the weather warms up is sure recipe for mossies.

How bad is the Caribbean? I get the feeling we are terribly spoilt here with the lack of biting insects and flies. We have wasps occasionally in summer, but they are not aggressive.

Sounds like heaven. They love me. My blood must taste like chocolate to them. Finding a cruising ground without mosquitoes is very high on my wish list.

If you like anchoring out, come on over when your boat projects have been completed .

Mossies love me too and I react badly unfortunately. Even in malaria prone locations I have hesitated using DEET though, as I am unsure what poses a greater risk to my longterm health.

It is just blissful here being able to sit out at dusk without any concern about being bitten.

Most of SoCal is effectively mosquito free all year long. The free anchorage outside of Coronado Island, and the free anchorages on the back side of Catalina island are pretty nice.

If you're looking to find a free place to live that's devoid of mosquitos and close to services, good luck and let us know what you find because that dream no longer exists.

THERE IS NO FREE ANCHORAGE INSIDE SAN DIEGO BAY. the ONE that USED TO be free was closed. now you go to cop dock, speak with the police and they will inspect your boat for seaworthiness and mebbe alow you 72 jours to anchor, 72 hours is up at 0900 the third day. not 1300 when you got the permit, but 0900.

if you speak of the surfline anchorage on pacific side of coronado penisnula, pays your money and takes your chances, sucks to be there in a storm of any kind.... not to mention the thieves of sd bay have been relegated to this outside location. pretty nice??

it isnt much for a temporary mooring. san diego mooring co is the source of aall moorings except fiddlers cove, in san diego bay.
now mosquitoes..

yes san diego bay has em. sd bay is within the dengue location parameters found on cdc site
yes most every where with fresh water has em.
especially if said fresh water stands more than 3 days.
use skeeter netting liberally and occasional deet or autan or whatever you choose.
oil cockpit woods with citronella oil, which is a mineral oil with citronella and does work. i added orange peel.
skeeter netting works. i even have porthole screens of the stuff.
remember that west coast skeeters and jejenes, aka no see ums, love avons bs oily stuff that SOME folks find useful as skeeter repellant.
i found baby oil to work just as well.

I lived on a boat in SoCal for several years and I miss that so much. Here in Bug Central you better have the spray ready or be ready to run inside when the sun starts to set if you are anywhere near shore. I hate it. We are seriously considering returning to the west coast and that is one of the reasons why.
