Morocco?

We're just about to set off to the Canaries and considering popping into Morocco on the way. I'd like to hear from anyone who has cruised there? Safety sailing on the coast, safe mooring to leave the boat and venture inland, fishing nets? Etc

We've been to Mohammedia (dirty and loud) and El Jadida (30$ per night to be allowed to anchor in the harbour, no marina and no facilities) end of 2016.



In both places it was a serious hassle to clear in and out (in Morocco you always have to do that when changing the port). We did not feel very welcome as yachties and we had to leave our passports and boat papers at the immigration police which i absolutely disliked.



There are MANY unlit fishing boats along the coast, and some of the bigger ones are trawling serious nets unlit nets between them. Navigating the coast at night was a real pita.



On land, Morocco was really nice. It's cheap, friendly people (apart from one rip-off guide in Agadir), good transport per train and there is very nice food. I would consider visiting the country again, but not by boat.

I have heard 'less than nice things' about these places (Tanger as well)
That is why we opted for Rabat , modern marina , *very* friendly staff and customs that are used to clearing in foreign yachts

Sailing along Morocco might be limited fun. Worst sailing of my life. There are lots of tiny fishing boats with nets, (caught net) no lights and hard to see on radar. On our journey we had big swell and we cancelled our plan to stop. Next time we will go via Madeira that’s for sure.

Fishing equip. an issue and various fishing craft messy esp. at night. Viable just not a pleasant stroll.

have been into safi,agadir and tangier,tied up to the customs dock in the fishing port.
the water is red with fish blood,and the boat still smelt of sardines 2 weeks later!

otherwise they are all ports of refuge which can be entered in any weather,and any state of the tide.
agadir has a marina for yachts outside the main harbour,that is pleasant enough for a stop,and secure,with good connections for trips inland.

I was in Tangier earlier this year. Construction on the first phase of the new marina complex looked complete with most of the docks I place. I had heard the fishing fleet would be moved to the newly constructed fishing harbor this summer but not sure if that happened.

Here’s a rendering of the completed marina with the Medina in the foreground lower left. Should be very nice facilities.

We stayed at the newish marina in Agadir. It was excellent. The price was so low as to basically be free and it's in an awesome location surrounded by top class restaurants and shops. I would really recommend it.
